Relation between education and income of immigrants in Germany
Jandová, Pavlína ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Doležel, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on migration. First part describes theories of migration. Secondly, it follows historic development of migration in the Federal Republic of Germany and its current legislation concerning movement of people. It also describes socio-economic characteristics of people with migration origins. The main goal of the study thesis is to show a relation between education and income of foreign inhabitants of Germany. The analysis is based on human capital theory. Used data were made available by German Socio Economic Panel (SOEP) at the German Institut for Economic Research. The analysis of statistics of the German Statistical Office and of the SOEP data have shown there are differences in income of foreigners and natives caused not only by different returns to education, but by language level, too. Different returns on education and experience do not limit only to Germans and foreigners, differences between men and women were found as well. Basic variables influencing income are same for foreigners and natives, however They differ in additional variables. The income is impacted by the geographical region of work in case of natives, for instance, whereas the income of foreigners is influenced more significantly by their level of German language.
Estimating the elasticities of labour supply for SMEs in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Šabić, Ada ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Želinský, Tomáš (referee)
This Master thesis aims at testing the intertemporal substitution hypothesis (ISH) for small and medium enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We predicted a positive relationship between the hours worked and the transitory changes in wages, and tested the hypothesis using the data collected via surveys of small entrepreneurs in North-Western Bosnia and Herzegovina; collecting data on daily income and the hours worked. The estimated wage elasticities are positive and different from zero, according to which it appears that the hypothesis of negative wage elasticities has no empirical evidence in the case of Bosnian and Herzegovinian entrepreneurs. This result implies that the intertemporal labour substitution hypothesis found supportive evidence and that we can reject the daily targeting hypothesis. We also argue that entrepreneurs tend to pursue profits across working days because their main motive for running a business is the accumulation of capital and wealth, so that they follow the pattern of intertemporal labour substitution. The findings can be explained by an unfavourable business climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is a result of a long-lasting transition process the country is still undergoing. Ukrainian labour migration and remittances in the European Union
Šperková, Lenka ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Korbel, Václav (referee)
The remittances or money transfers sent by migrants to the country of origin are considered to be one of the welfare channels with potential to influence macroeconomics indicators. The aim of this thesis is to analyse migration and remittance behaviour of Ukrainian migrants in the context of the EU. Study is based on the questionnaire survey inspired by the similar projects in the Latin America and Mexico. Contribution of the thesis lies in the detailed analysis of the topic that separates different forms of remittances. The econometric model consists of statistical summary of the data and three hypotheses tests focusing on the probability and amount remitted; consumption behaviour and probability of getting skilled position. According to findings, probability and amount remitted is determined by demographic factors and direction of effects differs in the case of regularly and one- time payments. Altruism and business financing are primary motives to remit. Remittances appear to be transferred by informal channels into the productive forms of consumption. A procurement of skilled position is positively influenced by human capital factors but also reflects labour market situation in the destination country. Economic analysis of moon phases on human behaviour
Klečková, Tereza ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Lelovská, Adriána (referee)
The moon and its lunar cycle is a theme that occurs in society since time immemorial. Does lunar cycle affect human life including its economic and social aspects? Do ordinary people and managers of large corporations act differently when the moon is full? Does consumer behavior change? Is at the time of the full moon rising crime and accidents? Can the effect of month on human behavior be scientifically tested? Although the above -mentioned topic may seem a bit bizarre we decided to process it in this thesis. Nowadays is popularization of science very important and widely used by for example the leading economic faculties of leading universities in the USA and the UK. This work attempts to answer the above questions and test the above mentioned context by using econometric methods. In this work we can read about the moon and myths and legends which are bind to it. The thesis presents several studies that have addressed the topic before, and their results. And then it will analyze available data from three basic areas of human behavior - crime, healthcare and business. The results which are part of this thesis imply the existence of the influence of the lunar cycle in two of three selected aspects of human behavior - health and trade.
Possible incidence of Turkish EU accession: development of migration flows
Glazar, Ondřej ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Turnovec, František (referee)
In this thesis we apply the panel data estimators on the migration data from 18 European Countries into Germany to construct forecast of future migrations. Based on the estimated results we forecast the migration flows from Turkey into the European Union. In the first two chapters the framework and background of the Turkish EU migration is described and migration as a stand alone economic phenomenon. In a main part of the thesis the first two sections are combined. The panel data model is constructed and the data are successfully tested for cointegration. We find that the seemingly unrelated regressor is the most efficient estimator in this framework. Results reveal that the network effect is the strongest driver for the migration followed by the target country labour market conditions and the income effect is actually relatively small. Particularly, the Turkish income does not have any effect on migration, because it is entering the model in a two variables that are working against each other. Also the low importance of opening a labour market is found. Finally the estimated coefficients are used to predict migration to Germany and through appropriate extrapolation to the whole European Union. Three scenarios of migration were created and the sensitivity of estimated coefficients on migration from...
Economic Implications of Turkish Accession to the EU: Advantages and Disadvantages
Gurbanov, Rashad ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
The European Union has long established itself as the world's most powerful regional supranational formation, which is achieved thanks to its economic results, geopolitical influence, and military might. European integration offers countries with an opportunity to boost their development and have greater impact in the international arena. However, the EU accession criteria are quite hard to meet, and many countries face significant difficulties in this respect, which is the case of Turkey. Since 1987, when Turkey officially applied for membership in the EU, the country hasn't completed its integration in the European community yet. This thesis investigates the main economic advantages and disadvantages in the context of Turkey's prospective accession to the European Union as a full-fledged member state.
