Research Topic Alternative Spirituality(ies) in the Czech DIY Punk Subculture : Beliefs, Practices and Experiences in a non-spiritual subculture, a comparative study between the scenes of Vsetínsko and the city of Ostrava 1. Statement of the problem (what?) The Czech republic is known to be a strongly atheist country with a strong tendency toward alternative spiritualities. The aim of this study is to investigate differences in spirituality within the DIY punk subculture depending on the area, where the members live and practice or experience their spirituality. The comparison will be between the Ostrava scene (a big lowland city capital of a highly industrialized region) and the Vsetínsko region (a hilly, small town region). 2. Geography of Subcultures: Punks and Skinheads in Prague Author: Michaela Pixová Abstract This thesis is concerned with the geographical aspects of subcultures, specifically those considered so-called "youth subcultures". The research is focused on two typical examples of youth subcultures - punks and non-racist skinheads. The aim of this thesis is to elicit some of the ways subcultural identity may influence one's spatial behaviour, perception, decision-making and choice of localities. The research was accomplished by means of qualitative research methods, such as participant observation, structured interviews and informal interviews. The beginning of the thesis is based on theory. The first chapter is concerned with the discussion of literature and evaluation of resources, while the second chapter is concerned with the description of subcultures, both as a phenomenon in itself and as concrete groups punks and skinheads in the case of this thesis. The rest of the thesis is based on the research itself. It is divided into three chapters: methodology, review and characteristics of the localities used by subcultural members, and finally the formation of subcultural centres and their meaning for subcultural members. Ecotourism in Balikpapan Bay

Tourism in tropical areas represents the fastest-growing branch of tertiary sector. The Balikpapan Bay (Eastern Kalimantan, Indonesia) is partly covered by mangroves and remains of primeval tropical forest that are extraordinary for their unique biodiversity. To avoid over-exploitation of described destination, detailed analysis of the evolving tourism and implementation of its sustainable form - ecotourism is necessary. The submitted project builds on one of the latest topics of longitudinal research running by Stanislav Lhota, PhD. in this area. Supervisor of this thesis, Radek Trnka, PhD. also joined the research in its beginning in 2005. Description and evaluation of current condition of ecotourism in Balikpapan Bay area is the main goal of the diploma thesis. Therefore, activities of organizations acting on natural tourism field, and which are connected with ecotourism, were analyzed in depth. The semi-annual field research was done in the area of Balikpapan Bay, while a combination of several qualitative techniques, especially participant and non- participant observation and semi-structured interviews as well as document analysis marginally, was used for data collection. Struggle for the right to the city: Alternative spaces in post-socialist Prague

The dissertation focuses on spaces in post-socialist Prague which transcend the hegemony of capitalist social and spatial relations and provide alternative spaces for non-profit culture and grassroots activities used and operated by students, artistic and creative communities, alternative subcultures, and NGOs. The author presents 14 case studies focused on these spaces, whose existence in the city is threatened. Referring to Marxian urban theory and the concept of the right to the city, the author critically investigates the democratic character of the social structures which are based on the contemporary socioeconomic model, and interprets the way in which the imperative of capital-accumulation, combined with the legacies of the totalitarian past, constrain the development of open democracy and civil society, and the creation of diverse, vibrant, progressive, and socially inclusive urban environments. The empirical part of the dissertation outlines the process of creating and operating alternative spaces in Prague during a changing political-economic context, and describes in detail, alternative spaces that existed in Prague in the early 21st century.
