Development of split style commentary "play by play" and "colour/analyse" in sports live programme (1975 - up to date)

This diploma thesis deals with the type of split commentary on television sports broadcasts, in which a commentator-professional from the ranks of journalists and one or more commentators-experts from the ranks of former top athletes in the given discipline collaborate on the commentary. Many academic texts have not yet dealt with this type of commentary and its development, so my aim is to offer a definition of split commentary, its brief factual development, to determine the main features of its real use and to compare its form when commenting on various sports. In the future, this thesis can serve as inspiration for texts that could relate, for example, to a comparison of the form of split commentary at home and abroad. The thesis offers an introductory theoretical part with the definition of sports commentary in general, determining the components of which sports commentary consists, defining the type of split commentary, describing the roles of commentators in its use and the actual development of split commentary in Czechoslovak and later Czech Television. The methodological part is followed by an empirical part focused on the research of specific examples of sports broadcasts commented on by split commentary.
