Velké množství historických voskových pečetí se dochovalo ve fragmentovaném stavu, což souvisí se zvýšením tvrdosti a křehkosti, kterému pečetní vosky v průběhu přirozeného stárnutí podléhají. Bezprostřední příčinou mechanických poškození pak bývá neopatrná manipulace nebo nevhodný způsob uložení archiválií. V této metodice jsou porovnány vlastnosti jak tradičních, tak i některých alternativních voskových směsí, které přicházejí v úvahu pro konzervaci a restaurování poškozených pečetí. Cílem je upozornit na přednosti a úskalí použití každé z nich, a usnadnit tak konzervátorům a restaurátorům výběr materiálu, který bude odpovídat jejich konkrétním požadavkům. V kapitole 2 jsou nejprve diskutovány obecné nároky na takové materiály, a to z hlediska technologického, praktického i etického. Kapitola 3 se zabývá vlastnostmi včelího vosku a možnostmi jejich modifikace přídavky dalších látek. V kapitole 4 jsou potom diskutovány nové možnosti, které otevírá použití směsí na bázi vosků fosilních. Kapitoly jsou doplněny o konkrétní příklady a doporučení. A large number of historic wax seals have been preserved in a fragmented state, which is linked to the increase in hardness and brittleness that sealing waxes undergo during natural ageing. The immediate cause of mechanical damage is careless handling or improper storage of archival records. This methodology compares the properties of both traditional and some alternative wax mixtures that are applicable for conservation of damaged seals. The aim is to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using each of them, making it easier for conservators to choose a material that will meet their specific requirements. Chapter 2 first discusses the general requirements for such materials, from a technological, practical and ethical point of view. Chapter 3 deals with the properties of beeswax and the possibilities of their modification by the addition of other substances. Chapter 4 then discusses the new possibilities that open up the use of fossil wax mixtures. The chapters are supplemented by specific examples and recommendations.
