Light like a dramatic expression tool in cinematography

This thesis focuses on the importance of light as one of the main aspects of filmmaking and as a main tool for creation of atmosphere in cinematography.
I mention some expressive cinematographer's styles in the history of cinematography and how different the work with light was in the context of the era.
I focus on realistic and logical way of work with light and on technical and technological cinematographer's tools
which enable this work and help him to create the light atmospheres and support the script to be perfectly visually translated.

The change of the lighting approach in filmmaking with the arrival of LED technology

LED lightning technology is relatively new element in the field of filmmaking. The aim of this thesis is to clarify how did the cinematographers‘ approach towards lighting change with the arrival of LED technology with regard to usability of LED sources in practice. The theoretical part of this thesis is going to analyze what are the technical benefits of LED lights in comparison to traditional light sources. The practical study describes the experience of the cinematographers who are using LED sources in practice. This thesis concludes that LED lights are able to compete with traditional light sources and are even able to exceed them in many ways.

Imaging styles of American Cameramen in the 1960’s and 70‘s in the 20th century

An analysis of the changes in style in cinematography during the „New Hollywood“ or „American New Wave“ of the 1960’s and 70‘s is the intent of this thesis. The main context for this analysis is the influence the French New Wave had on American Cinema. We try to look at specific aspects of American visual culture and the progress made in that culture as a result of American cinematographer’s reaction to new cinematic ideas. As a result of new thinking in cinema Hollywood cameramen began making “mistakes” acceptable and using them as visual tools, that their older colleagues where forbidden to use. Bonnie and Clyde was the first widely successful “New Hollywood” film, so in comparison to Jules and Jim, its French equivalent, we can look at the way visual language changed and how differently the same cinematic thought can be brought to life in two very different cinematic cultures.
The main contribution of this thesis is the analysis of the new visual tools that American cameramen brought to world cinema. These tools can be observed when watching almost any audiovisual product made after 1967, when Bonnie and Clyde had its premiere. For future cinematographers the knowledge of the historical context of these visual tools can be beneficial for more informed viewing.

Cine Reflect Lighting System and its use in films of Michael Haneke

This bachelor thesis deals with the lighting system Cine Reflect Lighting System and its ability to approach the lighting of a scene in a different manner. First part of this thesis summarizes advantages and disadvantages of mirror systems, which can be helpful for cameramen to choose the right lighting technology for their movie. In the second part of thesis I focus on CRLS usage in Michael Haneke movies, especially in his movie The White Ribbon (2009)

Means of expression and color solutions Vittorio Storaro movies

In this thesis I focused on professional life and creative work of Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. His lifelong journey as the creator of the image, understanding the energy of colors and color shades, light and shadow, their essential meaning and harmony in his works. Through these two major means of expression in film he tries to represent the emotions and the spirits of the characters in the story.

In this diploma thesis I summarize and analyze information about cinematographers of the 70`s and 80`s of the 20th century. I deal with the basics of theory in the context of the period, as well as artistic relationships, and detailed analysis of specific films, with the target to explain the innovative visual procedures established in this period in Russia. I aim to show the influence of the unique production of the period on todays work by analyzing given means of expression.
