Contemporary German Youth Language Based on the Youth Magazines "Bravo" and "Cool". A Linguistic Study

This diploma thesis examines the linguistic construction of the youth language in the widely read teenage magazines "Bravo" and "Cool". The aim of this work is to determine what linguistic and stylistic means define the speech of young people. In the foreground of the analysis, which seeks to define the differences and similarities between the German and Austrian youth languages using a sociolinguistic basis rooted in the theory of language varieties, is the ever-growing phenomenon of combining German with English, i.e. "Denglisch".The study also explores the extent to which text genres in mass media influence linguistic varieties. The thesis initially defines the specialized terms in the context of variation linguistics, with diatopic and diastratic varieties playing an important role. Subsequently, the features of youth language are presented, with an emphasis on linguistic and stylistic markers. The results show that both "Bravo" and "Cool" include Anglicisms. The investigation reveals that the use of lexical neologisms in "Bravo" is not significantly more frequent than in "Cool". It appears that both magazines occasionally employ such neologisms to make their texts more interesting and appealing, but they may not be as prominent as other stylistic features and linguistic aspects. Czech Catholic Magazines for Children and Youth in 1945-1948

The purpose of this thesis is to cover the topic of the Czech catholic children's magazines within the period of 1945 - 1948. Firstly the thesis contextualizes the historical background in the terms of looking back to the period of the occupation and then turns to the consequences that the occupation brought to the catholic population. Further the thesis offers an insight to the situation after 1945 mainly from the catholic point of view and focuses on the catholic press within the given period. In the next section the thesis characterizes the trends of the children's and juvenile literature in the period of 1945 - 48 through literary pieces, which form an integral part of the analyzed magazines. This part also deals with the general overview of the Czech children's and juvenile periodicals output within the given period. The main part of the thesis then characterizes and analyzes two chosen periodicals: Anděl strážný (The Guardian Angel) a magazine for catholic children and Dorost (The Juvenils) a magazine for catholic juvenils. This part of the thesis analyses the contents, structures and partly also the visual appearances of the chosen periodicals and tracks any changes of these aspects in single volumes. This graduation thesis is focused on the children's magazine "Mladý hlasatel", which was published by "Melantrich" publishing house during 1935-1941, and his role from September 1937 to September 1938. This thesis would like to analyse principal aspects of its history, especially its influence on readers' interest in issues of active national and state defence. The branches of this analysis are these: current news, belletristic, instructional and educational articles. It also tried to describe the relationship between "Mladý hlasatel" and the other newaspapers and magazines published by "Melantrich", to compile the c. v. of Břetislav Mencák, editor of "Mladý hlasatel". At the same time it found and rebutted many mistakes and inaccuracies, which were unknown. It essentially made visual available this otherwise hard accessible magazine. This thesis would like to be a contribution to the history of "Mladý hlasatel", and to the history of Czech children's magazines and point to the neglected problem of a children's role and potentialities during the Czechoslovak crisis 1938.
Position of the magazine Mladý svět in Czechoslovakia during the seventies and eighties

Diploma thesis "Position of the magazine Mladý svět in Czechoslovakia during the seventies and eighties" deals with the magazine for young people called Mladý svět. It gives a brief summary of its creation and development during the sixties and focuses on the period of seventies and eighties. It explains political and social situation of that period in Czechoslovakia, especially in area of mass media, and it particulary works with content of the magazine. It analysis the number and content of its columns, the way they were interpreted and development of these characteristics during the given period. It follows topics of the articles and its relation to readers of the magazine and communist regime and its institutions. It deals with the audience of Mladý svět and especially with its reactions and feedback it provided. Than it focuses on the censorship and the way the magazine was controlled, on the given regulations and imposed penalties. It attempts to explain reasons why Mladý svět become phenomenon of its era and why it had so unique position within similar mass media products.
