Media Representation of The great Most strike

This master's thesis deals with the Great Strike in the city of Most and its depiction in two state and one regional periodicals, namely Rudé právo, Lidové noviny and Brüxer Zeitung. The Great Strike was a significant display of miners' discontent, which went beyond the region's borders and influenced everyday life in the whole country. The extent and consequences of this protest action were unique at that time. My objective was to find out what depiction there is in the then periodicals. The thesis contains a brief historical insight into economic crisis and media situation in Czechoslovakia at the end of the 20th century. In the fist section, there are described economic aspects which induced problems not only in mining but in the whole economy. The activities of trade unions in the First Czechoslovak republic are also included. The second section describes in detail the development of the Great Strike, including events preceeding it. The third section is dedicated to the region of Most and its particularities in the industrial and social fields. The fourth section is focused on methodology and establishment of research questions. 1968 Prague Spring in Karlovy Vary through the prism of the regional newspaper Stráž míru

This bachelor thesis deals with period of Prague Spring from the standpoint of the periodical of Karlovy Vary Stráž míru. It presents a brief historical perspective on the events and the media situation in Czechoslovakia. In the first chapter there are social and international events which preceeded the Prague Spring. Attention is focused on events after the rise of Alexandr Dubček to the head of Communist Party, Akční program of Communist party and the activity of reformists. The second chapter deals with the media situation in Czechoslovakia. There are described large changes in the media sphere during the Prague Spring, especially the revocation of censorship and the development of all types of media. This chapter includes the description of legislation and international meetings, which have affected the situation in the country. At the end of the theoretical part, there is a brief description of the weekly Stráž míru. Stráž míru was a regional periodical in the district of Karlovy Vary. The third chapter has an analytical nature as individual articles are analytically discussed. The analysis of articles provides a view of events in the Karlovy Vary and puts them into the context of societal issues.
