Adversative discourse marker though and its Czech translation equivalents
Szonowská, Kristina ; Brůhová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Šaldová, Pavlína (referee)
The present thesis will focus on the discourse marker though and its Czech translation equivalents. Though has two basic functions. Either it can work as subordinator, in which case it introduces adverbial clauses of concession, or it can be adversative sentence modifier with connective function used as means of text cohesion, in other words conjunct. The thesis will be dealing mainly with though in the role of discourse marker, which is its prevailing function in present-day spoken English. (Biber et al. 1999: 850) Various aspects of though will be analyzed. Specifically, the position of though in a sentence and punctuation (whether the conjunct is separated by comma or not) will be examined. The thesis will have two main research goals. Firstly, describe usage of the English conjunct though. Secondly, find out what linguistic means are used in Czech when translating though. Material for my analysis will be extracted from parallel translation corpus InterCorp (version 13). The analysis will be based on 100 examples of sentences with the conjunct though, and their Czech counterparts.
