Daily targeting versus intertemporal substitution - estimating elasticities of labour supply on the example of small and medium enterprises (SME) in the Czech Republic
Hrdý, Rostislav ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Rečka, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis explores labour supply on the example of small and medium enterprises in the Czech Republic. It contrasts two basic hypoteses - the hypothesis of daily targeting and the intertemporal substitution hypothesis. The hypothesis of daily targeting is based on determination of income which workers try to achieve. On the other hand, the intertemporal substitution hypotesis assumes that hours worked depend on wage rate. I have used the survey to obtain monthly data of work hours and earned wage by Czech entrepreneurs. Based on the obtained data I have tested two hypotheses. Wage elasticities have positive values which lead to rejection the hypothesis of daily targeting. I have offered several possible explanations of obtained conclusions. One of them is the focus of entrepreneurs on accumulation of capital and wealth as the main motivation for business. This is related to recent economic transition in the Czech Republic.
Social and economic impacts of Ukrainian immigration in the Czech Republic
Hluštíková, Kateřina ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Lešanovská, Jitka (referee)
Ukraine is currently one of the largest exporters of foreign labour force, which among other countries has a significant share in the Czech Republic. Based on available literature this thesis summarizes meaning and general impact of migration, especially remittances, and brings an overview of history and causes of Ukrainian migration. The empirical part deals with the evolution of sending remittances in time based on the remittance decay hypothesis. The main purpose of this thesis is to verify whether the duration of a stay abroad has a real impact on the amount of remittances, and whether the remittance behaviour differs for permanent and temporary migrants. Data from questionnaire survey in seven EU member countries provided by MIRPAL (Migration and Remittance Peer Assisted learnings) were used for this analysis. It was determined that propensity to remit declines rapidly with increasing length of stay abroad. However, there was no impact of time on the amount of remittances. Surprisingly, the effect of planned return wasn't proven in relation to the amount nor to propensity to remit. The crucial impact lies in family ties and income, both of which support pure altruistic motives of Ukrainian migrants. Corruption and growth in developing countries
Lacroix, Jean ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Strielkowski, Wadim (referee)
Corruption is morally condemnable but what about its economical effect on the efficiency of on economy? Different transmission channels positively and negatively correlated with growth exist. The aim of this work is to catch the overall reality behind this impressively high number of transmission channels. Another task is to show the concrete consequences of corruption on a little economy like Haïti and what could be the consequences of the weaknesses induced by corruption. A presentation of the theoretical background is described together with the particularities of corruption in developing countries. A case study on Haïti, its infrastructure and the impact of corruption after the earthquake of 2010 will illustrate the theory. Last but not least, we present a model, where we analyze corruption as a determinant of growth in developing countries using data of 2011.

Krejčí, Martin ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Novák, Jiří (referee)
Position of small and medium companies in the information technology sector plays important role in the functioning on any state's economy. Focusing on a specific local market and using the Czech Republic as a case study, one has to state that most Czech firms face difficulties when trying to achieve economic success. Based on this fact, small and medium enterprise rating seems to be appropriate approach to determine factors that influence their performance and thus the possibility to help with their situation. Aim of this Master thesis is to determine these factors and construct econometric success rate models. Questionnaire research among ICT enterprises, and further statistical analysis showed that the earnings- employee ratio, average revenues and the R&D importance ratio plays the most important role in their success. Both, financial and non-financial indicators perform significantly in these predictions. Bibliographic record Krejčí, M. (2013): Factors that influence the success of small and medium enterprises. It also describes socio-economic characteristics of people with migration origins. The main goal of the study thesis is to show a relation between education and income of foreign inhabitants of Germany. The analysis is based on human capital theory. Used data were made available by German Socio Economic Panel (SOEP) at the German Institut for Economic Research. The analysis of statistics of the German Statistical Office and of the SOEP data have shown there are differences in income of foreigners and natives caused not only by different returns to education, but by language level, too. Different returns on education and experience do not limit only to Germans and foreigners, differences between men and women were found as well. Basic variables influencing income are same for foreigners and natives, however They differ in additional variables. The income is impacted by the geographical region of work in case of natives, for instance, whereas the income of foreigners is influenced more significantly by their level of German language.
Innovation in small and medium enterprises
Ehrenberger, Marek ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Hausenblas, Václav (referee)
This thesis provides insight into factors that influence the innovation activity of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Czech Republic. Its key part analyzes a survey conducted among over eleven hundred Czech SMEs. A model of determinants of innovations is constructed and estimated. Own R&D is identified as a key driver of innovations for the firms. Other important factors include investment into technology, improvement of quality of a product or service or presence on foreign markets. Barriers to innovations and external factors with negative impact as perceived by the firms do not prove to constitute a real inhibitor of innovative activities. Economic Aspects of Remittances and Migration: Case Study of Ukraine and the Czech Republic
Weyskrabová, Blanka ; Strielkowski, Wadim (advisor) ; Luňáčková, Petra (referee)
This master thesis is driven by two main objectives. The first one is to provide a general overview of migration in economic theory with a specific focus on remittances and their aspects and impacts. We found that there is no clear consensus about effects of migration and remittances on source and target countries and thus further research is justified. The second aim of the thesis is to analyse migration and remittances between Ukraine and the Czech Republic using primary data from survey questionnaires collected by the Ukrainian Migration Project (UMP). According to our findings, remittances are determined mostly by demographic characteristics and levels of income on both the sending and receiving side, implying their altruistic origin. More importantly, it was not confirmed that remittances are channelled primarily into consumption. On the other hand, remittances do not influence productive spending of households either. These findings contribute to the overall discussion in the area of remittances and may suggest some policy implications.

Kopecsni, Juraj ; Schneider, Ondřej (advisor) ; Teplý, Petr (referee) ; Strielkowski, Wadim (referee)
The recent financial crisis has impacted several financial areas. The thesis examines the above mentioned areas and consists of three empirical essays on pensions and banking. It is a collection of essays dealing with different aspects of risk, and it contributes to the recent debates about politically embedded risk in the pension system, credit risk faced by private institutions, and the performance assessment of banks' branches, focusing on quality dimension.
