Hydrogeological aproaches as the tool for the mitigation of negative impact of climate change in water management: Evaluation of qualitative and quantitative aspects of managed aquifer recharge
Rozman, David ; Hrkal, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Rapantová, Naďa (referee) ; Pech, Pavel (referee)
The thesis adresses the issue of efficient use of groundwater resources under the ongoing climate change conditions, which results in reduced natural recharge of aquifers. It focuses on the assessment of qualitative and quantitative aspects of managed groundwater recharge. In addition to a review of the issues of artificial recharge, the thesis provides two outputs. The first one is a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of artificial infiltration in crystalline conditions, typical for a large part of the Czech Republic, where at present artificial infiltration is not a commonly applied procedure. The second key output is the monitoring of the occurrence of new types of micropollutants from the category of so-called emerging pollutants, which may limit the availability of drinking water sources, especially in periods of climatic stress. Research within the PhD project was conducted at several pilot sites and the results are published in peer-reviewed articles. The obtained findings confirm the suitability of the managed groundwater recharge procedure and the considerable effectiveness of attenuation processes of the aquifers in degrading micropollutant pollution.
Flooding of the Hamr I mine and evaluation of the geological structure impact on the hydrogeological conditions in the northeastern part of Stráž block
Rozman, David ; Datel, Josef (advisor) ; Hrkal, Zbyněk (referee)
The main objective of diploma thesis is to evaluate the impact of the geological structure on the hydrogeological conditions in the northeastern part of Stráž block. The study area in northern Bohemia is characterised by Cenomanian and Turonian sandstone aquifers, which are horizontally divided by Lower Turonian aquitard. The thesis focuses groundwater level analysis and study hydrogeological impacts of faults, neovolcanic veins and disturbances of rock environment caused by uranium mining. First part of the study presents description of general geological and hydrogeological conditions in the area with summary of previous investigations and reports. Various hydraulic interventions during mining, which have great impact on the groundwater level situation are described. Based on the data from collected boreholes, contour maps of groundwater level are prepared to study its shape and temporal changes. Hydraulic communication through aquitard and through Stráž fault zone have been examined by correlations of groundwater levels. The results of the study confirm sealing effect of Stráž fault zone in the examined section. Barrier effect of the neovolcanic veins has been confirmed on several locations and examples of increased hydraulic conductivity as the result of fault disturbances have been located....
Water footprint of crops for biofuel production
Straka, Štěpán ; Hrkal, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Rozman, David (referee)
The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to apply a research study for the assessment of often- overlooked effects of growing crops used for the production of biofuels, according to their so- called water footprint. In the theoretical part, the thesis focuses on the definition of the concept of the water footprint, its history and the gradual development of people understanding the impact. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the issue of definitions and determination of water scarcity. The theoretical part concludes with basic information about biofuels, their division and a presentation of the most commonly used biofuels. The following chapters summarize the current state of biofuel production in the world and familiarize the reader with the issues this production causes. The main part of the thesis is the synthesis and processing of data regarding the water footprint of selected crops grown as a source of biofuels, comparison of the values with climate zones and evaluation of the suitability of the production of these crops concerning water resources. Keywords: water footprint, biofuels, maize, canola, sugarcane, oil palm
Emerging pollutants issues in waters
Pohan, Tomáš ; Hrkal, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Rozman, David (referee)
Emerging pollutants (EPs) is the name for a very heterogenous group of many pollutants that have appeared in surface and groundwaters in the last few years. As this is a relatively new and extensive issue, there are problems with the lack of data, from which we could clearly assess their long-term behavior, environmental impact in the environmentand, last but not least, the long-term impact on human health. The purpose of this work is to comprehend the view of EPs and summarize the existing knowledge about their behavior in the aquatic environment, the impact on human health, monitoring methods, technological water treating methods and applicable legislation of the European Union and the Czech Republic.
Managed artificial recharge as a tool to eliminate negative impacts of climate change.
Kvašňovský, Tomáš ; Hrkal, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Rozman, David (referee)
: The topic of artificial recharge technology for water supply into the underground, its direct use and application in the field is becoming a more frequent foreign question, but also in the Czech Republic. This is due to the negative trend in groundwater levels over the past 10 years, caused by drought and temperature regression trends. The theoretical part of this thesis presents the knowledge of the use of artificial groundwater recharge, even with specific cases in the world or in the Czech Republic. This work is especially focused on a very specific case of the construction that represent underground dam in the village of Meziboří in the environment of the Czech massif "hard rocks". Specifically, its efficiency and impact on natural groundwater runoff. For this purpose, a numerical model was developed in the program Groundwater Vistas (extension for MODFLOW). From the results we can observe the influence of natural groundwater regime in both static and dynamic model. After simulating the dam in a steady- state regime of unaffected conditions, the groundwater level in the model before the dam increased significantly above ground level. The possible pumping without drying the collector then represents values 5,4 - 5,8 m3 /day (0,063 - 0,067 l/s) from the well just before the dam. The drain...
