Fulfilling the role of a grandparent through smart technologies
PRŮŠOVÁ, Karolína
This bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of long-distance grandparenting, which relies on the use of modern technology. The overview section discusses the significance of grandparenting within the family structure, as well as the issues and realities associated with aging. It also examines various forms of communication, both verbal and nonverbal, and explores how modern technology impacts the lives of older adults. The main part of this thesis consists of the empirical part, which through semi-structured interviews, finds out how the role of grandparent can be fulfilled through modern technologies and what aspects are necessary for this fulfillment.
(Non-)prepositional -ing complementation of stop a prevent: a register perspective
Průšová, Karolína ; Šaldová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Brůhová, Gabriela (referee)
The thesis investigates (non-)prepositional -ing complementation of stop and prevent, i.e., the constructions prevent/stop + NP + from + -ing and prevent/stop + NP + -ing, from the perspective of their competition is three registers and from the perspective of structural and semantic factors potentially influencing the choice between the from-construction and the from- less one (including the construction with the gerundial complement poss-ing, i.e., prevent + genitive NP + -ing). Since the frequency of the from-construction and the from-less construction has been proved to be to some extent a matter of dialect (it differs in British and American English), the thesis aims to compare frequency of these realizations of complements of prevent/stop from the perspective of text type, namely in three selected registers representing the British variety. Material for analysis was extracted from six corpora/subcorpora representing fiction, academic language, and periodicals, with each two corpora/subcorpora representing one register. The theoretical part of the thesis describes complementation of prevent and stop from both the synchronic and diachronic perspectives and summarizes the results of the studies dealing with the from-construction, the from-less construction and the construction with the gerundial...
Infinitival complements of the verb help in present-day spoken British English
Průšová, Karolína ; Malá, Markéta (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee)
The thesis investigates the use of the bare infinitive and to-infinitive as a complement of the verb help in present-day spoken British English. It focuses on the frequency of each form of the infinitive and on factors influencing the choice between them. Material for the analysis is extracted from the corpus Spoken BNC2014. The theoretical part defines the infinitive, describes its forms and functions, and introduces different approaches to infinitival complements of help together with the studies concerned with them. The analysis consists of two parts. In the quantitative part the frequency of the construction ‚help + (NP) + bare infinitive' and ‚help + (NP) + to-infinitive' is determined. The qualitative part analyses these constructions in terms of factors influencing the choice of the infinitive form after help, as they were described in secondary literature. Except for the factors adopted from secondary literature, attention is paid to other features connected to the individual constructions. key words: complementation of the verb help, bare infinitive, to-infinitive, factors influencing the choice of the infinitive form, present-day spoken British English
