"It's just a state of mind" - An Ethnography of Pain and Injury Among Elite Athletes
Korečková, Adéla ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Poděbradský, Oldřich (referee)
The main topic of this thesis is pain and injury. The research on these two phenomena, which are closely related to elite and high performance sports, was conducted in the environment of a training group of elite athletes - throwers. The aim of the thesis is to describe how these researched athletes react and how they experience pain and injury. Pain and injury are two distinct concepts that may or may not occur together. Pain is a more subjective phenomenon, whereas injury tends to be viewed more objectively. Athletes test the limits of the human body in training and competition, and it is very common for both of these phenomena to occur. A culture of risk-taking is also associated with testing the limits of the body, which is also included as a research subquestion in the thesis. In order to gain a more comprehensive view of the researched issue, not only the athletes themselves, but also the coach, sports doctor and physiotherapist were involved in the research. Qualitative methods were used during the research, which consisted of observations, interviews and document-based data.
Soundscape of Prague Psychedelic Guitar Rock Scene
Poděbradský, Oldřich ; Jurková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Stavělová, Daniela (referee) ; Kratochvíl, Matěj (referee)
Since its beginnings in the 1960s, psychedelic rock music and "psychedelic sound" sound has become an integral part of rock and Western popular music. This scope of this PhD thesis covers the performance of psychedelic rock music in Prague, Czech Republic, i.e. Prague's psychedelic soundscape (Shelemay 2006). The structure of the thesis is loosely inspired by the scapes concepts as defined by Arjun Appadurai (1996). First, it summarizes the development of the "psychedelic sound" and employs ethnographic research in order to elucidate what this sound means to its agents within the studied soundscape. Subsequently, it proceeds to discover who the agents of this scene are, how the roles of the performers and the audience blend together, how the agents understand their music within the multi-genre context of the scene, and what the phenomenon of psychedelic rock music means to the agents - both in terms of its sonic elements and the "ritual" (Turner 1969) aspect of live performances, often associated with the use of mind-altering substances. The aim of the thesis is to describe the psychedelic soundscape of Prague as a large organic network based on reciprocal friendship and support, rather than as a mere set of music groups that refer to themselves or are referred to as psychedelic. "It's got to be dirty": Comodification of remembering in case of Prague Burlesque ensemble
Poděbradský, Oldřich ; Jurková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Seidlová, Veronika (referee)
This thesis focuses on the commodification of remembering in the case of the Prague Burlesque group. Burlesque or neo-burlesque as an entertainment genre is not as well known in the Czech context as it is in Western Europe, USA or Canada. However, after ten years of activities of the Prague Burlesque, this genre has been receiving more and more recognition in the entertainment market. In this thesis I focus on the perception of burlesque and remembering on the "golden age" as percieved by the members of the Prague Burlesque group as well as the audience of the shows, and how this remembering is commodified in the field of marketing, ether in relation to the regular Prague Burlesque Show or the annual Prague Burlesque Festival. This thesis combines theoretical concepts relating to simulacra (Baudrillard, Mac Cannel), collective memory (Halbwachs, Erll) and commodification of retro and nostalgia after the World War II (Grainge, Moore) with my field research, which took place from 2015 to 2017.
