The media image of Václav Havel in broadsheet and tabloid press

The thesis titled "Media image of Václav Havel in the Quality and Tabloid Press" analyzes and interprets selected texts about the first Czech President Václav Havel in quality (Mladá fronta DNES) and tabloid (Blesk) press during a selected period. The aim of this thesis is to answer research questions as how the selected press informed about V. Havel during the selected periods, what image of V. Havel was created in the selected press during the selected period, and whether quality press experienced tabloidization. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part describes the characteristics of quality and tabloid press and the process of tabloidization. It also introduces theoretical concepts that this thesis is based on, such as agenda-setting, gatekeeping, and social construction of reality. To provide a more comprehensive picture of Vaclav Havel's life, there is one chapter dedicated to him in the theoretical part. The practical part introduces the analysis method, followed by its procedure and results. Quantitative content analysis showed that more information about V. Havel was reported in the selected serious daily newspaper Mladá fronta DNES than in the selected tabloid daily newspaper Blesk. The explanation for this phenomenon may be that quality press...
The image of the position of the western woman and the western feminist movement in the woman's press in Czechoslovakia in 1948-1989

The Bachelor's Diploma Thesis "The Image of Women's Role in the West in Women's Magazines in Czechoslovakia in 1948-1989" discusses the different development of women's social statuses in the Eastern and Western Blocs in the bipolar world of the second half of the 20th century. The main objective of the thesis is to determine how women's magazine Vlasta depicted social status of women living in the West during the Cold War, and how the depictions influenced the changes in international relations in the respective period. The author has decided to implement the discursive analysis. Since it would be rather demanding to process all published issues of Vlasta in 1948-1989 due to the quantity, the writings for the analysis were those published around the International Women's Day. The author has decided to focus on this period because the International Women's Day was celebrated in both blocks, thus she assumes that space dedicated to women's social status in various countries is bigger in the time of the celebrations than in the rest of the year. The analysis of the figures showed that Vlasta magazine accommodated the image of women in the West and their social status to the geopolitical development of the Cold War.
