Radical-based tuning the surface functionality of MXene

The family of MAX phases and their derivative MXenes are continuously growing in terms of both crystalline and composition varieties. MXenes are a new family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides, with a general formula Mn+1AXn, where n = 1–3, M denotes a transition metal, A is an element such as aluminum or silicon, and X is either carbon or nitrogen. Considering the various elemental composition possibilities, surface functional tunability, various magnetic orders, and large spin–orbit coupling, MXene can truly be considered as multifunctional materials that can be used to realize highly correlated phenomena.
Plasmon-mediated electrocatalytic activity of TiB2 towards water splitting

Environmental problems related to the economy based on fossil fuels are of paramount importance. However, transition to renewable energy sources is restrained by the availability of storage technologies. Electrochemistry is a widely recognized prominent tool to achieve this goal by converting renewable energy into the form of chemical bonds accessible further as fuels, such as hydrogen produced by water splitting. Crucial losses in such process are caused by the high overpotentials, required for water splitting as a hydrogen source. To achieve required efficiency of water splitting appropriate catalysts have to be found with the suitable combination of activity, stability and cost. Nano-structured, two-dimensional materials (2D) are attractive candidates due possessing many of the desired properties and highly tunable characteristics. Employing light allows additional degree of freedom to boost conventional photo-electrocatalysis, in particular plasmonmediated electrocatalysis. Enhancement of the catalytic activity can be increased even further if the catalytic system absorbs wide range of light spectrum. In this study, we combine plasmon-active Au grating with 2D flakes of TiB2, to perform plasmon-mediated water splitting half-reaction – hydrogen evolution.
Modification of Metal Surfaces by Optically Active [7]Helicene Derivatives for Molecular Sensing.

New derivatives of 9-(pyridylethynyl)[7]helicenes were firstly prepared and fully characterized in this study. Consequently, they were successfully separated to their (P)- and (M)-enantiomers using a preparative HPLC with chiral stationary phase. These optical antipodes were advantageously used for modification of silver plasmon active nanogratings suitable for a SERS-based detection of (bio)molecules. Properties of such nanostructures were studied using different spectro- and microscopic techniques. As proved by UV-Vis spectrometry, a change of plasmon resonance wavelength position and intensity was observed and indicated the appearance of chiral surface plasmon polarization.
