The present thesis deals with the image of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Stalin's Russia. It analyzes the characteristics of his personality in the older Russian and Soviet historiography. It focuses on his portrayal in art, especially in film Ivan the Terrible by Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein. It deals with the emergence and the general acceptance of this film during World War II. It assesses its historical credibility, ideological expression and artistic significance.

The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze the personality picture of Tsar Ivan the Terrible and his government in Stalin's Russia with regard to the transformation that occurred in spirit of the party ideology. The interpretation of historical facts of Ivan's period in the present work is depicted not only in historiography but also in artistic production, and it aims to express the way professional works, novels, dramas, and films are used for political propaganda.
