The Image of Napoléon Bonaparte in Works of Henri Marie Beyle (Stendhal)

(anglicky) The main objective of this BA thesis Image of Napoleon Bonaparte in the Works of Stendhal is to uncover on the basis of intertextual analysis of Stendhal's works a way of Stendhal's attitudes to Napoleon Bonaparte. Due to the complexity of Stendhal's character, diversity of genres he took interest in and specificity of era in which and about he was writing, we'll have to examine closely author's life which is the subject of our second chapter. The definition of historical novel and autobiography in relation to the veracity shall depict and make clear why the author has chosen these two specific genres, a consideration which we devolop mainly in the third chapter. The fourth chapter is devoted to the importance of historical context for Stendhal's novel creation. We pay particular attention to Stendhal's criticism of Bourbon Restoration and his Napoleonic idolatry, the strict opposition between those conflicting attitudes which is very typical for Stendhal's novels. The fifth chapter deals with particular examples of Stendhal's protagonists of The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma who are the supporting pillars of the contrast between the two eras mentioned above.
