Women and Fashion in Gustav Klimt's Paintings
Huptychová, Kamila ; Rakušanová, Marie (advisor) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to approach paintings of women by Gustav Klimt from a contemporary feminist perspective in the context of fin de siècle fashion reform in Europe. The main object of this reform was the emancipation of women, therefore the thesis examines whether Klimt's inclusion of reformed garments in his paintings is compatible with this primary intent. Furthermore, in light of Adolf Loos's arguments, it discusses whether the Viennese incarnation of the reform was truly progressive in a sense of true emancipation of women. Finally, the thesis is concerned with the real situation of women in fin de siècle Vienna, and argues that the reason for the absence of prominent women in the art of the period does not necessarily lie in their passivity or marginality, rather in the permeation of dominant ideology into academic discourse about modernity.
