Descendants of El Inca Garcilaso: Cholos and mestizos in Peruvian and Ecuadorian novels
Ganobčíková, Katarína ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to map the portrayal of mestizo characters (sometimes also called cholos) in the literature of Peru and Ecuador, who take the long road to descend from the mountains into the big cities. Besides the stigma connected to their origin, they also have to handle the problems connected with being city people, and their task to find their own place in contemporary society. The most important sources are novels in which the main characters themselves, either with pride or shame, identify as mestizos. These are no longer the idealized archetypes of characters that are only somewhat of a bridge between a native American and a Creole. Through the heroes of these novels' mental diversity, which offers a number of perspectives, it is possible to watch an authentic display of life in the decadent city community of Peru and Ecuador. With the help of the analysis of particular works and recurrent motifs in the novels of the 20th and 21st centuries that constitutes the main part of this thesis, we will demonstrate their effort in finding and defining their own identity. The impact of nature on human mind and further character development in the novel of Ciro Alegría La Serpiente de Oro
Ganobčíková, Katarína ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Urbancová, Linda (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is focused on the influence of the environment on the personality of the characters in the work La Serpiente de Oro. In this work we are going to discuss various themes and motifs characteristic for the inhabitants of Calemare. With a gradual analysis of these motifs we will be able to create a picture of the life of the people in Calemare, which is in a large part influenced by the river Marañón and the jungle. An important part of this work is the acquaintance with the author of the work, Ciro Alegría, whose work is highly influenced by the political-social situation in Peru. The author captures the simple, but harmonious life of the people living in close proximity of the jungle, who conform to the majestic nature. In the key part of this thesis we are going to analyze the behaviour of the characters who come from a different environment and their consecutive change of perception. Furthermore, the work focuses on the comparison of the indian, mestizo and creole characters who appear in the work. The novel can also be compared to other novels of the jungle and regionalist novels, which is addressed in the final chapters.
