António de Andrade and his activity in Tibet

The aim of this thesis is to introduce the personality of the portuguese jesuit António de Andrade and his journey to Tibet, where he entered as the first European across the Himalayas and where in the 17thcentury established the first missionary station. My aim is to outline the perspective from which the christian world of that time was looking at oriental cultures as well as the reasons that led jesuit missionaries to undertake such long and dangerous journeys. Several letters from his legacy have been preserved and I will study their contents in detail. They include a description of Andrade's voyage to Tibet, the course of missionary activities in Tibet and a description of Tibetan realia. To conclude, I will sum up the results achieved by Andrade and review his role as an explorer.
Fantastic in the novel Blank Gaze by José Luís Peixoto

The main objective of this thesis is to define narrative scheme and elements of the fantastic in the novel Blank Gaze (Nenhum Olhar, 2000) by a Portuguese writer, José Luís Peixoto. His works have been considered part of the mythic narrative current, which, according to a common definition, often draws attention to deformed values of today's society. For José Luís Peixoto, the fantastic, from a modern perspective, or neofantastic, an alternative means for expressing a need for belief in today's society. This fact becomes the main and timeless legacy of the work, and the reader does not be aware of details of religious rules. After the introduction the thesis focuses on outlining the literary and historical context of contemporary Portuguese prose. The second chapter also pays attention to the biography and bibliography of José Saramago, both politically and ideologically involved author. Similarly to Peixoto, in his works he touches the human essence and presents unconventional reflections about values of present society. The third chapter tries to introduce Peixoto as an autor of Blank Gaze. It also mentions him as the laureate of the 2011 José Saramago Prize - a reward which is awarded to Portuguese writers younger than thirty five. The present thesis, "Masculine and Feminine View of the Colonial War (António Lobo Antunes and Lídia Jorge)" concerns the peculiarity of the masculine and feminine view of the colonial war in Portuguese colonies in Africa. This thesis focuses on two world-wide known novels: Os cus de Judas by António Lobo Antunes and A costa dos murmúrios by Lídia Jorge. The aim is to reveal that the standpoint was influenced by different social status that women and men held in Salazarian Portugal and in the colonial war itself. The introductory section is devoted to a brief summary of the Portuguese history which had a major impact on the contemporary national identity. The era of the Estado Novo, the Colonial War and the Carnation Revolution was outlined. The literary situation in Portugal after the Revolution was also shortly observed. The main part began with the introduction of António Lobo Antunes & Lídia Jorge and listed out their principal writings, concentrating primarily on Os cus de Judas and A costa dos murmúrios. Afterwards the focus turns to the different position of the women and men in the colonial war, comparing how it influenced their respective lives. While Lídia Jorge observes the destructive impact of the war on its surroundings, António Lobo Antunes views the injustice on the personal basis....

Keywords: João Guimarães Rosa, Brazilian letters, translation poetics The aim was to translate the Brazilian language innovator's novel, add an interpretative commentary and draw conclusions pertinent to Rosaean studies and translation poetics. An introductory first chapter proposes an interpretation of the work in the literary history context. The translation itself attempts to reflect the musicality of the original while maintaining its semantic content. The third chapter analyzes its text with respect to the translation methods and strategies used, and is concluded with an overview stemming from critical reflection. Emphasis is placed on the problematics of poetic language and its translatability, the Mallarméan chance and necessity as well as motivation and arbitrariness of the lansign, and on the ratio of intentionality in translation. The text is analyzed in the light of Saussurean anagrams and the ensuing paragramatic theory as well as Derridaean différance, while the best appropriate to translating seems to be Meschonnic's concept of rhythm as well Mukařovský's semantic gesture. Caetano Veloso and the Brazilian tropicalist movement

The thesis Caetano Veloso and Brazilian tropicalism analyses the music movement of the same name, which took place in Brazil between 1967 and 1968. It traces its context and mutual synergies with avantgarde art, which originated at the same time in the innovatory art of ????, in the radical theatre Oficina, in the new wave of brazilian cinema represented by Glauber Rocha or in the work of a group of concrete poets led by the Campos brothers; all of this with regard to the landmark political development of the end of the decade. The thesis also deals with the connections and similarities of the movement with the aesthetic and philosophical positions of Brazilian modernists and it traces the significance of tropicalism for the further orientation of Brazilian songwriting. This analysis is preceded by a summary of the overall development of Brazilian music, mapping not only its roots but also all of the key moments, impulses, trends and mutual connections. The emphasis is put on the art of songwriting, which is dominant in Brazil.
The concrete poetry in Brazil

The main subject ofthis thesis is a brazilian concrete poetry between years 1950 and 1960. This poetry, along the poems-constellations by a swiss poet Eugen Gomringer, precedes an experimental poetry movemen ofthe sixties. The thesis is divided into three parts. First one "Experimental poetry" is a wiev on this poetry in general- sources and methods typical for this formo The second part "Experimental poetry in Czechoslovakia" is about this poetry in socialistic Czechoslovakia between 1962 and 1968, during the short period a relative enlightement of the political regime of that time. Cul ture scene could open the contacts with the current events in the world. For the poets experiment brought a certain creative freedom based on a play with a form and a language. At the back ofthe totalitarian system experiment has oftenly a grotesque features. The honeycomb of the jati bee: Iracema as a translation problem

The translation of Iracema represents difficulties on several different levels. To cope with these, it is first necessary to understand the multilayered complexity of Iracema as a work of fiction. That is why, after a brief summary of the plot, I addressed its genre, composition, the aspects of style and, above all, its language. Every work of fiction is obviously influenced by the historical and literary context and by the circumstnaces of its creation. It was therefore necessary to put Iracema into the context of Brazilian romantism and, more specifically, that of nationalist indianism. José de Alencar uses different mythological patterns creating his Iracema; in my analysis of the mythical aspect of Iracema I focused on the impact of these patterns on the formation of the imagery of the Brazilian nation. I attempted to apply the results of these partial studies on the only existing Czech translation of the book. Jarmila Vojtíšková and Jaroslav Vojtíšek translated Iracema in an elegant and easy-to-read style, which, however, ignored some of the crucial aspects, thus making the translation only partially successful. The shapes of memory in the novels of Lídia Jorge

In my thesis entitled The shapes oj Memory in Novels oj Lídia Jorge, I folIowed novels of present-day writer Lídia Jorge, who is the representative of "Post Revolution Generation"of Portuguese writers. Her publications are linked by the theme of memory as welI as critical reflection of Portuguese society. I made an effort to uncover what shapes does the "memory" gain and which meanings were used for its imaging on the basis of analyzing the novel s - The Murmuring Coast (A Costa dos Murmúrios, 1988) and The Garden without Limits (O Jardim sem Limites, 1995). I managed to find out answers on the question why the authoress even occupies herself with the interpretation of the memory comparing different views on the same matter of fact, that are ranked together by Lídia J orge in her novels. The memory in the analyzed novels appears in its very structures, because the main concern is always the retrospective recolIection, narrating of events that already have happened and cannot be changed, but its consequences are stilI lasting. The noise of death: Raul Brandão's Humus and the problems of its translation into Slovak

Raul Brando's Humus is incontestably one of the most important works of fiction in Portuguese literature of the beginning of the twentieth century and it brings a number of innovations on the formal as well as on the ideological level. The specificity due to these innovations makes it a book the translation of which represents very particular difficulties. The paper, based on a philological analysis of the novel, identifies these difficulties and searches for usable solutions, bringing a translation of selected parts of the book into Slovak. It is divided into three parts. The first is a brief presentation of the author's work and places him in the context of portuguese and european literature. The second analyses Humus with regard to the aspects of the novel which are crucial for the understanding necessary as a base for a translation attempt. The third part exposes the general conception of the translation and its theorical bases not omitting the explanation of the choice of tha parts of the text to be translated. Expected specific problems of the translation are presented as well as suggestions of possible solutions to these. Indian chronicles of Fernão Lopes de Castanheda and Gaspar Correia

This PhDr. work is a comparative historical work comparing two of five most important chronicles of the Portuguese India of the 16th century, History of the Discovery and Conquest of India by the Portuguese (História do Descobrimento e Conquista da Índia pelos Portugueses) by Ferno Lopes de Castanheda and Legends of India (Lendas da Índia) by Gaspar Cor- reia. The work is divided into three sections. The first section is an introduction to the topic selected. It outlines the causes of the huge Portuguese ultramarine expansion and what preceded it, as well as its progress. In this section there is a chronological overview of Portuguese expansion to Asia, which was initiated and implemented to a decisive extent by Governor Afonso de Albuquerque (1509-1515). Thanks to him, the so-called Estado da Índia founded by his precursor, Francisco de Almeida, got firm foundations and expanded territorially enormously. A brief characterization of Estado da Índia is in the second part of this section. The very conclusion of the first section is dedicated to the rich literature of ultramarine discoveries.
