Border Security of the Schengen Area from the Perspective of the Public Goods Theory

Radko Hokovský Border Security of the Schengen Area from the Perspective of the Public Goods Theory Abstract In the context of increasing illegal immigration to the European Union, doubts arise whether Schengen Area is fit to face this challenge, or whether it needs to be reformed. The aim of this dissertation thesis is to clarify questions surrounding functionality of the Border Security System of the Schengen Area by applying the theory of public goods. The main inquiry of the thesis is, whether it is necessary to further strengthen the EU competences in order to improve the functioning of the Schengen Border Security System (SBSS). First, a model of an ideal- type border security system is constructed in order to identify core functions of border security in relation to protection from illegal immigration: (a) deterrence of illegal immigrants, (b) prevention of illegal border crossings, (c) interdiction of illegal immigrants, (d) apprehension of illegal immigrants, (e) apprehension of illegal residents, and (f) removal of illegal population. This diploma thesis deals with European Union and current security threats, concretely with Cyberterrorism. Cyberspace and internet became essential parts of our living over the last decades due to rapid development of information and communication technology. The increased dependency on cyberspace is visible in all governmental operations, public-private sector, financial and business operations, as well as communications between individuals and groups. As a result our society is facing new threats. On one hand cyberspace is a place for economic growth and innovation, on the other hand criminals, spies and terrorist use cyberspace as a place for their activities. Our society should be aware of these negative impacts as well. Cyberterrorism by its nature is considered to be a very dynamic phenomenon. Regarding this fact this thesis provides a dynamic way how to define Cyberterrorism and reveals main perspectives of Cyberterrorism. Tracking the European Unions Convention on Cybercrime and main means to fight Cyberterrorism, this thesis analysis whether European Union disposes of appropriate means to engulf the dynamic nature of this phenomenon.
Sustainable development and post-conflict reconstruction. Case study: war in Kosovo

The Master thesis connects a concept of sustainable development and post-conflict reconstruction and uses this connection to analyze post-conflict reconstruction after Kosovo war in 1998 - 1999. The situation is analyzed in four dimensions - economic, social, political and environmental and the thesis examines how much importance is given to the different dimensions. The dimensions are analyzed according to different stages of post-conflict reconstruction. The conclusion of the analysis is that the environmental dimension was given less importance than the others and the development was not sustainable.
Role of the chancellor in the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany: Angela Merkel

This master thesis is concerned with the role of the chancellor in the foreign policy with respect to the institutional possibilities that the German political system provides him, and also with respect to the personality of the chancellor - it strives to answer the question, if it is possible to identify the personality impact in the chancellor foreign policy positions. As the case example the current chancellor Angela Merkel has been chosen, who serves for a period long enough to carry out the research and who is at the same time well-respected personality abroad. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the chancellor has the rights to intervene in the foreign policy and uses those rights. By means of the discourse and content analysis of chancellor's speeches it has been possible to identify foreign policy preferences of the chancellor which can be associated with her personal life experience.
Analysis of the foreign policy of Iran towards the West in terms of holistic constructivism

Iran´s reactions often seem very controlversial and inapprehensive to the western countries, therefore Iranian Islamic Republic represents an inscrutable actor in the international field. Construstivism introduces a new approach to this issue and it suggests not to consider Iran as an usual rational actor but to take into account the ideological factors as well. This paper deals with the construstivistic analysis of the foreign policy of the Iranian Islamic Republic towards the West and tries to answer the question if there is a role of the Iranian national identity in forming of the Iran´s foreign policy.
Chinese environmental policy and the factors of its dynamics

Chinese environmental policy has been going through transition since 2006. This shift has been represented in investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and control of pollution. The theses tries to find out the factors of this dynamics through an analysis of potential influences. It comes to an conlusion that the shit in chinese policy has been driven mainly by its domestic issues, whereas the impact of the external milieu has been present but limited.
Austria as a small state in international organizations: the tactics of pursuing Austrian national interests in the European union

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of small states in the context of the European Union. It principally focuses on strategies of small states which help them to pursue their national interests in the European Union. Austria has been chosen as a case for the practical purposes of this diploma thesis. The theoretical part introduces the concept of small state in general, characterizes this specific term in the structures of the European Union and points out to the weaknesses of small countries, which may reduce their foreign-policy activism. Subsequently, the text analyses the strategies of small states which are used for the promotion of national interests in the European Union, or more precisely in the Council of the European Union. A practical section of the thesis deals with Austrian foreign policy engagement in three key political issues of the Alpine republic. The analysis of the Austrian initiatives during the years 1995-2015 has identified the strategies which Austria used to pursue its national positions in the European Union.
Dynamics of the Human Right Priority in Czech Foreign Policy

This bachelor thesis deals with the human rights priority in Czech foreign policy and its dynamics. The aim of this thesis is to characterize Czech human rights foreign policy in two different periods: from the beginning of the Czech Republic until the year of 2013 and from the year of 2014 until today and to compare those periods. First chapter is theoretical, it is focused on the role of human rights in the foreign policy of a small state. Practical part of the thesis is concentrated on characteristics of each period and on the evaluation of the development.
Problematic of French citizenship acquisition

Topic of the diploma thesis is problematic of French citizenship acquisition. Specifically, it focuses on obstacles and problems that occur during a process of acquisition that applicants have to face. The first part of the thesis consists of theoretical and methodological framework of citizenship concepts, principles for its acquisition and atypical conceptions of citizenship. The second part is namely addressed to French citizenship, changes of its content, and possibilities of its acquisition. The third chapter specifies obstacles and problems during the process of French citizenship acquisition and defines whether discrimination occurs regarding its acquisition.
Udržitelná diplomacie: Rozšiřování potenciálu diplomatických vztahů (Lekce z Nizozemí)

Within its scope, the thesis theoretically underpins the concept of sustainable diplomacy, using an evolutionary approach to diplomacy, and introduces criteria that allow its application on exemplary Dutch foreign policy projects. Three Dutch sustainable diplomacy projects are analyzed using a unified framework to allow their comparison and evaluation based on the criteria from the theoretical part. In light of the findings of the analysis, the thesis also acknowledges limitations of sustainable diplomacy encountered during the research to provide foundations for future development of the concept.
