Geo-oriented mathematical modelling: multiphysics and multiscale
Blaheta, Radim
This contribution is aimed at a brief introduction to two important aspects of nowadays geo-oriented mathematical modelling: multiphysics and multiscale. Moreover, these types of modelling are illustrated on problems currently solved at the Institute of Geonics AS CR.The multiphysics means modelling of coupled physical phenomena. In the case of the geotechnical engineering, it is typically modelling of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes, in other engineering branches, we can consider similar models, e.g. coupling of electric and mechanical phenomena. The modelling of coupled processes is particularly involved in modelling of sealing and plugging effects of bentonite barriers used in the design of underground repository of spent nuclear fuel. At present, the team at the Institute of Geonics is involved in the solution of Task A of the Decovalex 2015 project aimed at modelling in-situ SEALEX experiments, which were performed in Tournemire underground laboratory in France.
Iterative solution of singular systems with applications
Blaheta, Radim ; Jakl, Ondřej ; Starý, Jiří ; Turan, E.
This contribution concerns the iterative solution of singular systems which arise in many applications. Let us mention the following: - solution of PDE problems with pure Neumann boundary conditions (which is our main aim), see [7], [8], [20]. Such problems have a specific role in numerical upscaling, see [6], - solution of Neumann type subproblems in domain decomposition techniques as FETI, Neumann-Neumann, BDDC methods, see [22], [16], - analysis of Markov chain problems, computation of stochastic vector, see e.g. [18], [19], - computer tomography [15], [14] and inverse problems [4], [21].

High performance computing in micromechanics
Blaheta, Radim ; Hrtus, Rostislav ; Jakl, Ondřej ; Starý, Jiří
By micromechanics we understand analysis of the macroscale response of materials through investigation of processes in their microstructure. Here by the macroscale, we mean the scale of applications, where we solve engineering problems involving materials like different metals and composites in aircraft design or rocks and concrete in a dam construction. Different applications are characterized by different characteristic size. At macroscale the materials mostly look as homogeneous or they are idealized as homogeneous or piecewise homogeneous. A substantial heterogeneity is hidden and appears only after more detailed zooming view into the material.

X-RAY computer tomography in geotechnics
Blaheta, Radim ; Kohut, Roman ; Kolcun, Alexej ; Souček, Kamil ; Staš, Lubomír
The paper describes some experience with the X-ray CT-FEM analysis. It focuses on geocomposites arising by chemical grouting of coal substances and on using mathematical modelling of response to a load. The application potential of this new methodology is found in utilization of obtained properties for solving the stability problems by numerical modelling of geotechnical projects.

Blaheta, Radim
The annual report of the Institute of Geonics AS CR presents the results of the activities of the institute in the year 2010. In particular chapters there is information considerig the results in the field of science and research, cooperation with universities and the application sphere, international collaboration, information about organization of various scientific conferences, participation in editorial and scientific boards etc. There is also information about organization, personal structure and the economy of the institution including audit. Final part is devoted to planned activities in the next period.
Ph.D. Workshop 2010 Proceedings
Blaheta, Radim ; Kolcun, Alexej
These proceedings contain abstracts and contributions presented at the fifth Ph.D. Workshop of the Institute of Geonics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The workshop is split into two parts held simultaneously in Ostrava and in Brno, which concern geotechnics, rock mechanics, geophysics and mathematical modeling (Ostrava) and physical and social geography (Brno). The main aim is to bring together the Ph.D. students studying and working or having their supervisors at the Institute of Geonics AS CR. For the whole research community, the workshop gives a possibility to see new results and follow the progress in work in the field of Ph.D. training, which is considered as very important for fulfilling the mission of the institute in the society and training researchers for the future development of the institute.
SNA ´09 - Seminář numerické analýzy
Blaheta, Radim ; Starý, Jiří
Seminar on Numerical Analysis 2009 (SNA’09) is the sixth meeting of a series of events started in Ostrava 2003 and devoted to numerical methods necessary for mathematical modelling of problems in sciences and engineering. In this respect, it was natural that in period 2005 - 2008 the SNA conferences became a part of the project MSTEP (http://www2.cs.cas.cz/mweb/) Modelling and simulation of complex engineering problems: effective numerical algorithms and parallel implementation using new information technologies within the program Information society administrated by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. We hope that the tradition of SNA conferences will be preserved even after finishing the MSTEP project in 2008.
Mnohoúrovňové modelování geomateriálů a iterační řešiče
Blaheta, Radim ; Byczanski, Petr ; Harasim, Petr
The knowledge of microstructure in combination with properties of the constituents and mathematical modelling can be used for investigation of the properties of geomaterials at application scale. We investigate problems with both deterministic knowledge of microstructure, derived from X-ray CT scans, and stochastic one. The stochastic generation is also used for a systematic study of robustness of iterative solvers, particularly for Schwarz methods for PDE problems discretized by mixed FEM.
Ph. D. Workshop 2009 Proceedings
Blaheta, Radim ; Kolcun, Alexej
These proceedings contain contributions presented at the fourth Ph.D. Workshop of the Institute of Geonics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic held in this year simultaneously in Ostrava and in Brno on November 19, 2009. Ph.D. training belongs among the most important activities not only of the universities but also of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Note that in total more than 2000 Ph.D. students are being trained at the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It guarantees that the knowledge and experience from the research will be forwarded and extended, which is of principal importance for the development of the research and the whole academic system.
