Czech books for children and youth in the first half of the 19th century and their form of publishing

This thesis examines the form of publishing in the field of Czech literature for children and young adults in the first half of the 19th century prevailed over the territory of the current Czech Republic. There are only a few studies on this topic so far. Therefore, the research focuses on the analysis of the entertainment literature intentionally published for children and youth. The attached bibliography of 289 titles bound in 312 volumes serves as a basis for the analysis. Jungmann's History of the Czech literature and the electronic catalogue of the Czech National Library was used as the primary sources for identification of the particular titles. The systematic analysis of accessible titles scrutinized typography, the structure of the book and its external appearance, provenance marks along with production and distribution. Special attention was paid to titles called "robinsonade". The conducted research indicates that the children's books were specific in some aspects: enforcement of the Antiqua typeface, preface character, and interesting provenance records. The inquiry also reveals that the leading publishers of the children's books were the Archbishop's printing house and its tenants, Bohumil Haas and his sons, Martin Budislav Neuräutter, Alois Josef Landfras, Arnošt Josiáš Fournier, and...
