Childhood in Zbraslav in the 1930s and 1940s

The diploma thesis entitled The Childhood in Zbraslav in the 1930s and 1940s aims to answer the question what made childhood in Zbraslav in this time period distinctive and what features were the most influential. The first part is rather theoretical and describes the concept of a family based on the findings of sociology and history. As the concept of childhood is closely intertwined with family, we cannot separate the two from one another and need to focus on both. Overview of the most important scientific findings made by prominent experts from the field can be found in this section. The second part is practical; based on four distinctive components of children's lives which the author regards as important due to their influence on the childhood as well as on the future development of the child's personality and life in the adulthood. Those features are family life, school, reading, and free time activities. Although there has been a number of books and articles written about Zbraslav, only a small amount has focused on the 20th century and even less on childhood. As a result, the diploma thesis is based mainly on interviews with contemporaries from Zbraslav.
