Development of German Alpine Clubs in Czech Lands until 1938

Pavlína Chaloupská, abstrakt disertační práce Abstract: The thesis analyzes activities of the most important German Alpine clubs operating in the Czech Lands and interwar Czechoslovakia since their establishment until 1938. The history of alpine clubs is explained, and the organization of DuÖAV (Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein, German and Austrian Alpine Association) is analysed, on the basis of general and specific introductory information related to the alpinism in the late 19th century. The thesis is divided according to geographical location of the constituent sections. For each section of DuÖAV, the circumstances of its establishment are monitored, the sphere of its activity is defined, the internal organization is described, and the economic functioning is analyzed. The activities of Alpine clubs in Bohemia and Alps are charted in detail, and based on the research it was discovered that the most important activity of the Alpine clubs was the construction of the Alpine huts, owned by German clubs from Bohemia. Among other activities there were organization of guiding and rescue operations, giving lectures, balls and excursions in their locality. Two chapters are devoted to the most important personalities of the German alpinism in the Czech lands: Johann Stüdl and Rudolf Kauschka.

TITLE: Sudeten-German Nationalist Sports Associations and Czech State in the years 1918-1938 ABSTRACT: This dissertation deals with activities of Sudeten-German sports associations which had an negative approach towards the state. Their activities regularly provoked reactions from the state authorities and so it is possible to track down a whole genesis of mutual relations between the Czech state and individual associations in the archives. Among the most important sports associations was DTV Union. This union played an important part in the history of interwar Czechoslovakia, not only in the field of sport but also in the political sphere. Many top leaders of Sudeten-German political representation came from its ranks. Among the most famous Konrad Henlein, Karl Hermann Frank, Walter Brand and many others. Apart from DTV Union this dissertation also describes the most militant Sudeten-German sports association Volksport, which in that time became a synonym for the threat of rising Nacizm. The activities of Sudeten-German negative oriented sports associations had a significant influence on the course of events in Czechoslovak state in the second half of the 1930's and their anti-Czech attitudes culminated during the year 1938 and especially during the period of Munich Agreement. "Outdoor Education" and German Scout-Type Youth Organizations in the Czech Lands Title: "Outdoor Education" and German Scout-Type Youth Organizations in the Czech Lands Abstract: The thesis deals with the formation and history of German youth organizations in the Czech Lands. It especially covers those organizations that either directly referred to the Scout movement originating in the UK or US, or at least adopted the fundamental educational methods and principles of working with the youth which were typical for these movements. These organizations marked a revolutionary change in the approach to youth and their education. Such a change was possible thanks to a series of philosophical, pedagogical and political transformations in the society. Scout movements were especially built on the modern philosophical theories based on the ideas of American and German philosophers. However, the roots of this approach to nature and to human education can be traced to the early modern era, when the first modern approaches to teaching appeared and were generally applied under the changing economic and social environment of a modern society. Andrej Halada: The history and the development of Czech golf since its inception until the contemporary period. This work focuses on the development of Czech Golf during the 20th century as well as on its remarkable spread in the period following the Velvet Revolution. The six main chapters of this thesis chronologically describe the important moments and events associated with the rise of Czech golf. Within this thesis, I focus specifically on the following topics. The existence of the Golf Union ČSR. The early developments of Czech Golf until the year 1948 with a particular focus on the second half of the 1930's. Golf during the era of the communist regime 1948 -1989 and the social implications of the period on its development. The dynamic development of golf in the Czech Republic in the context of general development of the game in Western Europe at the end of the 20th century. The Golf course as the main element of the game and the conditions used for establishing and running in relation to its landscape, natural environment and demand. The presence of golf in Czech public media and its gradual transition into Czech public broadcasting.
