Film Interpreting and Subtitling at Film Festivals in the Czech Republic

The master's thesis deals with simultaneous film interpreting and pre-prepared electronic subtitles at film festivals in the Czech Republic. Simultaneous film interpreting used to be a widespread mode of audiovisual translation at film festivals. However, today it has been mostly replaced with subtitles; these are often pre-prepared electronic subtitles manually projected under the film screen by a so-called subtitle launcher. These types of audiovisual translation are generally characterized in the theoretical part of the thesis. In the empirical part, the research first focuses on film interpreting at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. As films are no longer interpreted at the festival, the research method of interviews with the then interpreters was chosen. Based on the information obtained from the interviews, it is described how films were interpreted and what working conditions interpreters had. General information on film interpreting was also gathered during the interviews. The second chapter of the empirical part deals with pre-prepared subtitles: first with the process of subtitle launching and subtitle launchers' working conditions, and then with the audience's opinion, which was elicited in a questionnaire survey at the Summer Film School Uherske Hradiste. The effect of the interpreter's professional experience on the note-taking language

The master's thesis is a theoretical and empirical study about the interpreter's notes in consecutive interpreting. The study mainly deals with the note-taking language and the effect of the interpreter's experience on the choice of note-taking language. In literature, many authors have already thoroughly studied note-taking. In the second half of the 20th century, three traditional interpreting schools emerged. Several authors created their own note-taking systems. Since then, there hasn't been a consensus among experts on the choice of the note-taking language. Some recommend using the source language, some prefer the target language and many experts are in favor of using both. Main approaches to note-taking and reasons why to use either the source language or the target language are listed in the theoretical part. The theoretical part also covers empirical research on the choice of note-taking language. Compared to the high amount of theoretical publications on note-taking, only few empirical studies were carried out, studying the choice of note-taking language. Despite its small scale, the thesis thus seeks to follow in the footsteps of previous empirical researchers and verify, by the means of an experiment, claimings of theoreticians. French translation of the New Civil Code. Translation analysis of selected parts

The thesis focuses on translation analysis of the Czech Civil Code and its French translation created between 2013 and 2015, commissioned by the Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic. The theoretical part outlines the problems of legal translation, characterizes legal language and legal texts, compares the evolution of Czech and French law, and describes the process of legal translation with the emphasis on equivalence of Czech and French legal concepts. The empirical part analyzes Sections 1209 of the New Civil Code and their translations into French. The key working method is translation analysis, carried out at several levels, against a background of linguistic and legal analysis. The core part of the thesis contains lexical analysis of Czech legal institutions and their translations into French. Lexical analysis is carried out by the method of conceptual analysis, which compares essential and accidental elements of Czech and French (and sometimes Swiss) legal institutions. Translation analysis aims to establish the method of translation that was used, and to determine if the method complies with the translation brief. The thesis also proposes a glossary based on analyzed Sections.

This MA thesis is a descriptive theoretical study dealing with the work of the conference interpreter, teacher and researcher Kilian Seeber. The thesis explores individual fields of interest of Kilian Seeber and the results of his research. It describes mainly the cognitive load in simultaneous interpreting, prosody and intonation, but also ethical decisions in simultaneous interpreting and issues connected with training of trainers. Furthermore, the thesis presents Seeber's teaching and interpreting projects and, last but not least, the reaction to his work and its reception in the international interpreting community.
