The survey and assessment of stone construction

This thesis is focused on applying the process of the assessment of existing structures from ČSN ISO 13822 on the evaluation of stone constructions. These are seen here as masonry structures, but with some specifics. Since the source of this specifics results from the natural origin of the building material and significant age of preserved stone structures, to its evaluation also the knowledge of geology and history of architecture is necessary. For this reason, this thesis contains also the geological overview of rocks used for building and describes characteristics of stone structures from different architectural periods. The aim of the practical part is to describe preliminary investigation of an existing stone construction on the example of the stone bridge in Dobromilice.
Evaluation of stone column defects using an ultrasonic method

This Bachelor thesis deals with evaluation of structure defects in stone column using ultrasonic method. Content of this thesis is divided to theoretical and practical part. Aim of theoretical part is to explain process of evaluation of existing stone structures according to norm ČSN ISO 13822. This part also contains listings of method for stone testing and brief explanation of chosen types of rock used for stone structures. Practical part contains tests used on columns using ultrasonic method and laboratory tests of chosen samples. Evaluation of measuring using ultrasonic method is based on knowledge of this method and visual inspection of columns. In laboratory tests were compared results of chosen properties on examples of same type of rock. These examples had different shape, moisture and measurement.

This thesis is focused on the evaluation of existing stone structures, particularly stone bridges. It contents a summary of the most frequently used structure types and materials of historic bridges as well as it presents some contemporary technologies. Thesis also presents methods of the construction stone testing, both laboratory and in situ. The process of the assessment of existing structures from ČSN ISO 13822 is being applied on the evaluation of stone structures, taking into account their specifics. These specifics results from the natural origin of the building material. The experimental part describes the survey and assessment of an existing stone bridge in Dobromilice, including a proposal for an adequate way of reconstruction.
