Teaching about Invertebrates at the Second Grade of Elementary School: a Case Study

The main aim of the study was to find out how specific teachers teach invertebrate zoology at the 2nd grade of selected primary schools. The first part of the thesis is devoted to anchoring the invertebrate curriculum in the Framework Curriculum for Primary Education and selected methods and forms of teaching with motivational character (mainly outdoor education, experiential pedagogy, research-oriented teaching, excursions, and didactic games). A substantial part of the work is also devoted to cross-cutting themes, specifically environmental education about teaching invertebrates. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of teaching strategies and attitudes in teaching invertebrate zoology to specific teachers. Using a questionnaire survey and by comparing the results obtained, problematic points of teaching invertebrates were identified: the laa number of representatives, the (need for) reduction of the curriculum related to invertebrate anatomy, the interconnection of schools with environmental centers' use of live representatives in teaching. The diploma thesis deals with the creation of educative gardens in educational institutions. Speficially, the author focuses on school gardens at elementary schools. She examines their historical development, current trends and the legislative framework, and explores the possibilities of implementing Framework Educational Programme for elementary education in school gardens through educative elements. An important part of the work is the analysis of the alternative as well as the conventional educational approaches to school gardens based on a detailed analysis of selected institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad. The author focuses mainly on the process of design, realization and maintenance of such gardens, their current use for educational purposes, and the elements that form part of these gardens. The author confronts the obtained information with available literature and knowledge in this field. She concludes her thesis by defining theoretical starting points for creation of school gardens at elementary schools. These are subsequently applied to an architectural study of a selected model area of the alternative elementary school ScioŠkola in Brno.

The focus of the bachelor diploma thesis presented shifts to the enviromental education, particularly to the use of school gardens in the enviromental education at secondary schools. The thesis presents several suggestions of school garden projects and offers various solutions in school garden realizations. Theoretical frame of the thesis includes underlying concepts in the use of school gardens, an analysis of alternative school systems, alternative approaches to the use of gardens within the enviromental education and the suggestions of possible structures and contents of the gardens that are suitable for teenage children. The findings are presented as a procedure of requisite steps during the realization of the school garden, documented by model case of a particular realization. The model study conforms to the requirements of the school management, uses the acquired findins and responds to contemporary trends in school garden realizations.Key words: school garden, environmental education, outdoor learning, adults, outdoor classroom.

In the theoretic part, the work gives the leader a view into the literáty overview within the field of elementary-school gardens, thein history and contemporary legislative framework which influences thein today´s look. The focus is on continuously more and more popular tendencies aiming on the human-nature relationship and an extension of such a relation into ecology, physiology, psychology, sociology and didactics. The work hints advantages of outdoor education and school activities, it shows us possibilities of founding an outdoor classroom and offers the reader an insight of already existing examples in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. In the practical part, the author offers solution of realization of a school garden in a chosen area; furthermore it incorporates principles of a naturalistic garden. The design of the chosen project is based on the author´s experience as well as data collected from the school pupils. The concept is extended by thematic level stimulating fantasy of child volunteers.

The bachelor thesis describes the current state of school gardens. It is focused on the envi-ronmental garden issue, which is discussed in the theoretical as well as the practical part. A research design is presented for a specific area, which is then developed into an archi-tectonic study. A sociological research among pupils follows as a part of the research de-sign. Results of the paper prove that children are interested in the issue of environmentalism and outdoor practical teaching. Final study demonstrates that there is a possibility of creating an organic school garden in an urban environment. The thesis can provide a review of the topic that has not yet been popularized in the Czech Republic.
Options of outdoor teaching environmental education in urban kindergarten Čéčova

This thesis focuses on the environmental education of preschool children of ages 3 to 6 in outdoor places. The theoretical part describes the basic principles, contents and means used in environmental education in kindergartens as a cross-section theme of preschool educational programmes. It puts emphasis on outdoor forms of education which lead to practical introduction to the world around us and seek to awake the need to care for nature and the life in it, because these are essential parts of human environment. The chapter concerning the safety of environmental education is no less important. The practical part of this thesis focuses on preparation and description of particular options of outdoor environmental education in the busy parts of České Budějovice near MŠ Čéčova, and their application in accordance with the educational programme of this particular school.
