Impartiality and value-based education in the teaching of political geography in high schools in Czechia: The case of the war in Yugoslavia

According to the Education Act the education is supposed to be apolitical, but at the same time the teacher is supposed to educate students about values. The question is how far it is better to remain impartial in order to avoid influencing students and how far it is better to present personal opinion for the purpose of value-based education. The aim of the thesis was to find out how high school teachers in Czechia perceive the need and possibilities of impartial teaching of political geography and related value-based education. The second objective was to propose suitable methods for impartial teaching of political geography in high school geography classes. Part of the thesis is specifically focused on the teaching of the war in Yugoslavia and the discussion of the impartial conception of this conflict. The research involved a quantitative survey involving 277 respondents from among high school teachers, followed by 9 qualitative interviews with high school teachers. The core of the work is the results of the research, which are compared with each other and presented in the form of graphs, tables and excerpts from interviews.
