The impact of football clubs' transfer market activities on their sports performances in the top four leagues of English football
Matyáš, Vojtěch ; Kantová, Klára (advisor) ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (referee)
Football clubs acquire players on the transfer market to achieve better sports performance. The relationship between transfer spending and results is not de- cidedly established, and the current research suggests that wage expenditure is a better predictor of sports results. This thesis examines the impact the char- acteristics of the incoming players, such as age, country of origin, or position on the pitch, have on sports performance. Part of the thesis also examines the difference in impact across performance levels. We used a dataset consisting of fifty selected Teams from the top four leagues of English football between the seasons 2001/2002 and 2020/2021 for our analysis. The results confirm the relationship between sports-related spending, meaning wage and transfer ex- penditures, and sports results. However, a relationship was also found between other selected independent variables and sports performance. Next, we also found differences between Teams at different performance levels.
