Vegetation characteristics of localities and distribution of Ophrys insectifera in the Czech Republic

Ophrys insectifera is a critically endangered species of orchid in the Czech Republic. It is characterized by the formation of sexually deceptive flowers, binding to specific pollina- tors and specific fungi in its mycorrhizal dependence. The bachelor's thesis describes O. insectifera, its occurrence in European countries (England and Ireland, the Netherlands, Serbia, Latvia, and Bulgaria), locations of its occurrence in the Czech Republic, and its risk factors. O. insectifera is considered the northernmost species of the genus Ophrys due to its occurrence in Norway. In all selected European countries, the distribution of O. insectifera is threatened. The threatening risks are: shading, rainy and cold climate, and sensitivity to ecological factors in the southernmost regions of its distribution. In the Czech Republic, O. insectifera was most often recorded on xerothermic grasslands of calcareous soil and in basophilic, more lighted parts of pine forests. The thesis also includes an overview of the recorded regions where O. insectifera was found in a particu- lar year. Germination requirements of rare and common plant species of Giant Mountains

For a long time studies were focused on searching optimal conditions of germination of individual species. During the last few years studies have started to search for a relationship between germination and various species characteristics. Most of them, however, use only one temperature during germination tests. Very few studies use more than one temperature during the germination tests. In the last years studies started also to compare germination between rare and common species, but these studies compare just a few species. There are no studies which would compare germination on broader range of species. Aim of this study was to indentify which factors are determing germination of species and to find relationships between germination and characteristics of rare species (n=62). Another aim was to find out differences in germination of pairs (n=24) of closely related rare and common species. To test the germination I have chosen a methodology with several consecutive temperatures. Throughout the time of testing , the seeds were placed either in light or in dark. The dataset was processed by linear regression. Habitat requirements and competition between native and invasive Impatiens species

Three of Impatiens species are widespread in the Czech republic, one is native, two of them invasive. Because all species occur in relatively similar habitats, the question is, whether the invasive species can negatively affect the native species, or even the original can can be displaced. The aim of the thesis was: (i) to compare habitat requirments of the Impatiens species, (ii) to determine if the coexistence of species is possible, (iii) to assess the impact of invasive species to the original species. The investigation was carried out using two sets of permanent plots in 5 localities. In the first set with a total of 84 plots (combinations of occurrence of the three species) site characteristics as tree cover, soil humidity, slope and bare land cover were directly measured and nutrient, light, humidity and soil reaction characteristic assessed using Ellenberg indicator values. The second set contained a total of 45 plots with one of the native-invasive congener pair being removed and the intact controls. Number, cover and height of the plants were assesed. The key enviromental factors determining distribution of the species were soil moisture for I. noli-tangere and I. parviflora, and tree cover for I. glandulifera and I. parviflora.
