Sports leisure time activities for people with physical handicap
NOVOTNÁ, Petra
Bachelor´s thesis "Sports leisure time activities for handicapped people" is focused on availability of sports leisure time activities for the disabled population in South Bohemia region. The main target of this thesis is to find out and to map the possibilities and availability of the above mentioned in this region. The document also contains comments of handicapped people on the existing offer and also opens the discussion if they feel being positively affected by sport in terms of their physical development and health improvement. The theoretical part of the work is divided into fourth chapters. In the first chapter, I defined what a physical handicap or disability is. In the second chapter, I divided physical disability according to a certain body part that is defected. I considered this as important to be more specific here and to describe more in detail each form of physical disability linked to the various body parts. In another chapter, I deal with the sense and the purpose of leisure time sports activities for disabled population and their history. I presented also if there is a law regulation or statement that gives disabled people some legal support, and what sports opportunities are available. In the fourth chapter I looked into compensatory sports aids offer. I used the qualitative survey method in the practical part of my bachelor´s thesis. The information collection went through a direct-asking method and through a semi-structural dialogue. There were three groups of respondents involved. In the first group there were sportsmen with inborn physical defect. The second group consisted of sportsmen with gained physical disability. To set up the third group of respondents, I addressed the heads and the managers of sports organizations realizing sport activities for disabled people. The questions were asked to find out if the offer in the region is sufficient for handicapped sportsmen and also to learn if there are some specific barriers that need to be overcome by them. Moreover there were some questions on difficulty of doing sports and motivation to overcome obstacles. In addition, there were questions on the main purpose of sports leisure time activities for disabled population. The questions for the managers of sport-oriented organizations were pointed to the financial and the managerial sides of such institutions, and to introduce the existing offer of sports activities. The survey showed that the biggest barrier for disabled population is the financial demand. Individual organizations could not run without their foundation partners and sponsors. Just because of big interest and passion for sport in general, sportsmen and organizations overcome this barrier and carry on. Based on the survey the results show there are limited opportunities for handicapped population in South Bohemia region. Hence there are organizations that are trying hard to offer as much as possible. The research shows there is lack of cycling opportunities so this field might be the one to be improved and to be worked on. The list of organizations providing sports leisure time activities for the physically disabled can be found in Attachment number 2, on the South Bohemia map. The outputs of the bachelor´s work can be used for propagation of sport for disabled ones among wide public, caretakers, doctors and people with disability themselves. Especially the last mentioned ones often do not have complex information how to spend their leisure time effectively.
