Portuguese of the State of Minas Gerais

The Brazilian Portuguese is versatile and exhibits a rich dialectological diversity. The state of Minas Gerais in terms of its population is the second biggest state of Brazil, and the local dialect, the Mineiro Portuguese, is one of the most widely spoken dialects in the country. This thesis aims to elaborate an introduction to the variant of the Portuguese language spoken in Minas Gerais in the framework of the Brazilian Portuguese and peculiarities of its development. Along with the Brazilian dialectological studies one of the focal points is reporting the most significant dialectological studies carried out in the area of the Mineiro Portuguese, the results of which point out to the most characteristic features of this dialect. The historic aspects of the establishing of the state of Minas Gerais serve as the basis for interpreting the most distinct traits of its language. In this way, this thesis offers a general overview of the Mineiro Portuguese, which may serve as a modest contribution to spreading the knowledge about the dialect outside of Brazil and a better understanding of the problematic of the dialectological diversity of the Brazilian Portuguese.
