Comparison of contemporary terrorism with terrorism of 1970s and 1980s

The thesis deals with terrorism and its development as a social phenomenon since 1970s. It has argued that terrorism has undergone a process of radicalization and globalization, particularly as a result of the changed international situation and proliferation of modern technology. Nationalistic terrorism has been replaced with a global form of terrorism. In a similar vein, revolutionist ideologies, typical for terrorist groups of 1970s and 1980s, has given a way to radical interpretations of religions, namely Islamism, which has received substantial popularity as a result of prevailing grievances of the Muslim world. Even though there is no clear distinction between the old and the new form of terrorism, the two social phenomena differ to an important extent. During the second half of 20th century leftist terrorist groups dominated the scene with their fight for a regime change and battle against capitalism as well as imperialism. The organization of the groups took the form of hierarchy and had only limited number of members. At the beginning of the new millennium, the situation changed dramatically with the proliferation of Islamic groups, including the global terrorist group al-Qaeda. Can suicide bombers be rationally acting people?

The paper deals with the phenomenon of suicide bombers. Terrorism is very serious problem of the modern world. Economics is the social science that studies human behaviour. So this science should be able to explain this extreme behaviour. The key goal of this paper is to describe the suicide attacks as rational action. The paper consists of two parts. The first part deals with the term rationality in economics and its alternative aproach. The second part is about suicide bombers. I have chosen islamic suicide bombers as a object of my work. The social profile of the suicide bombers is studied and the conection between education and wealth on the one hand and propensity to perpetrate the suicide attack on the other hand is discussed.
Global terrorism and its psychological aspects

This bachalor thesis concentrates on the phenomenon of terrorism and its psychological aspects. In the first third we speak about the definition of terrorism, terrorism as a communicating process, typology of terrorism and its evolution. The second and third part of the thesis deal with the psychology of terrorism -- especially with explanation why people commit terroristic acts, what their motivational factors are, what the group dynamics is about and if suicide terrorist are suicidal.
