Spreading the Czech Puppetry around the Subcarpathian Ruthenia

The bachelor theses discourses about Czech puppetry in Subcarpathian Ruthenia in the 1918- 1938 period. Since this topic has not yet been academically approached, I based my study on information collected from archival sources and contemporary periodicals and - regarding family marionette theatres - on information obtained from Ms Dana Kesnerova, an owner of such a theatre. In the theses I attempt to answer the question of to what extent the puppet theatre was used as a means of enlightenment, and I bring so far unpublished findings of puppetry in garrisons in the eastern part of the country, of usage of puppetry in the demanding edifying field, of the spread of puppet theatres in schools, and of puppetry in regional physical education clubs. An essential part of the theses is dedicated to family marionette theatres. These elemental chapters are preceded by a short introduction of education and cultural standards in Subcarpathian Ruthenia, introduction of traditional Ukrainian puppet theatre - the vertep - and a brief familiarization with the puppetry phenomenon in Czechoslovakia. In the final chapters I outline the fates of Subcarpathian Ruthenian puppeteers after the cessation of the First Czechoslovak Republic in autumn 1938.
