Automatic Creation of Organ Overtures for Church Songs

The focus of this master's thesis is an automatic creation of organ overtures for church songs from both theoretical and practical points of view. Organ overture is a short introduction to a church song. According to the fact that it can be described by a finite set of rules, it is possible to use techniques for solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems. An effective instrument to develop such system can be C++ programming language and Gecode library.
Melody Harmonization

The focus of this bachelor's thesis is an automatic harmonization of melody. The programme uses axioms of harmonization and is implemented in Perl language. The input is a text file that contains the melody that should be harmonized. The output is a midi file that contains the melody with the piano harmonization part.
Conversion of Piano Recording from WAV to MIDI

The aim of the thesis is to propose a system capable of automatic conversion of polyphonic piano recordings from the audio format WAV to MIDI. The thesis describes problems related to single tone recognition in music recordings and proposes a solution based on a probabilistic model that uses the Probabilistic Latent Component Analysis method. Recordings of isolated digital piano tones were used to train the system. The proposed system was tested on classical recordings of the Classical Piano MIDI database and on recordings of a Korg SP-250 piano and evaluated using a variety of metrics. The conclusion part contains the results of recognition success rate and their comparison with other existing systems.
Parametrizable Music Instrument for Mobile Platforms

The goal of this thesis is to create an application, which will be primarily used as three-axis parametrizable musical instrument, respectively a modifi ed MIDI controller, suitable for Android devices. Firstly, several products, which are available on the market, are reviewed and the reader is introduced to the problematics of audio synthesis, available technologies and typical Android device potential. The next chapter is dedicated to application design. Few designs are mentioned with focus on the chosen design concept. A part of this chapter is also a speci cation of the original concept, its implementation and advantages/disadvantages. The next part is dedicated to implementation and optiomalization of some of the critical points. Also the tests are evaluated including a survey about application usability. At the end, the whole work is concluded and the further development is outlined.
Interpreting J. S. Bach's Piano Partita No. 2

The aim of this thesis is to provide basic orientation in the context of Bach's Piano Partitas, their content and composing strategies Bach's music encompasses in general. In the opening of the thesis, there is a brief summary of the composers's biography aimed on the moments that are connected to the creation of the partita. Hence, the work is described in detail, each part is commented on and demonstrated in short extracts of music. The author of the thesis then explores, comments and compares various interpretations and recordings made by great piano and harpsichord female personas such as Martha Argerich, Tatiana Nikolayeva and Zuzana Ruzickova. A very important chapter of this work is the one that deals with historical musical instruments (clavichord, harpsichord, organ) as opposed to usage of a modern piano and the specifics of interpreting baroque music on a keayboard instrument such as melodic ornaments, dynamics, articulation and so on. The author also refers to her personal practical experience with this piece of music and discusses it from the interpretational and pedagogical point of view. Piano interpretation of baroque music at music schools

This thesis deals with piano interpretation of baroque music at music schools. The first chapter describes the specifics of baroque interpretation. This chapter contains nine subchapters which deal with following topics of baroque interpretation: expression, tempo, usual rhythm changes, ornamentation, basso continuo, posture and fingering, articulation and phrasing, dynamics and the last subchapter is about historically informed interpretation. The second chapter describes the beginnings of teaching polyphony. It mentions materials for the beginnings of teaching polyphony as well as some selected instructive pieces which can be used in teaching. The third chapter contains materials for teaching baroque music at music schools. The fourth chapter deals with pedagogical an interpretative approach to specific baroque instructive pieces from aforementioned materials and there are mentioned some general didactic principles too. The aim of this thesis is to understand the issue of interpretation of baroque pieces at music schools and to create a text that can be used as an inspiration for other students and young teachers of music at music schools. This thesis gives piano teachers a choice of music collection for their students which teachers can make a selection especially for them. From Linguistic Aberration to the Subversion of Power: Literary Code-switching and Code-mixing as Tools for Upsetting the Language of Power and Expressing Expatriation

This thesis explores literary code-switching, i.e. multilingual aspects within a single speech, as a key polyphonic structural element in the selected works. First, it analyzes Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands: The New Mestiza = La Frontera (1987) as a work, where the author seeks to establish a literary tradition that would reflect the life in borderlands and the given community through a new language. Secondly, the language of photography and multilingual speech patterns in W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants (1992) are considered as vital elements of the authenticity play. The following chapter deals with Franz Kafka's short stories, where gestures form an essential part of, if not the whole stories, and determine the fragmentary nature of such writing. Finally, the importance of language of power, the discourse of social realism altogether with their emergence into private and intimate discussions through repetitions and variations is commented upon in Václav Havel's play The Garden Party (1963).
