Blockchain-based DeFi lending: A challenge to traditional finance?

The goal of the thesis is to identify the factors that determine the default rate of the loans, with a particular focus on the pioneering research of blockchain-based decentralised loans. The thesis describes blockchain technology, its development, and functions, introduces decentralised finance (DeFi), and examines its advantages and challenges. The thesis's analytic part compares DeFi loans and peer-to-peer loans as an alternative to the traditional financial system. The blockchain-based DeFi loans realized through lending Compound are analysed by a logit model that predicts liquidation rate and examines if it is possible to perform the prediction without any information about the borrower due to the complete anonymity in DeFi lending. To illustrate the difference, the data from the Czech peer-to-peer lending platform Zonky was used to set up two logit models. While the first model uses all available variables, the second model is based only on loan-related variables to achieve a more precise comparison to DeFi loans. Results revealed several statistically significant determinants of default rate in the case of all three models. This bacherol thesis is focused on the risks of an alternative way of obtaining funds, which is peer-to-peer lending, on the czech and slovak financial market. In the theoretical part of the thesis the peer-to-peer lending as well as the reason why it is considered as a form of shadow banking are described. In the main part of the-oretical part the potenial risks, their sources and proposals for protection against those risks are described. Based on these proposals, the implemented rules of the selected czech and slovak platforms are compared in the practical part. The result of the comparison are the potential risks which are left partly or fully unadressed.

Brno: Mendel University in Brno, 2017 The bachelor thesis focuses on peer-to-peer loans and their providers in the Czech Republic. The thesis assesses peer-to-peer loans from the point of view of a representative borrower based on three selected indicators, such as interest rate, annual percentage rate and increase coefficient. The thesis further examines the question, whether system of peer-to-peer lending is more advantageous than traditional banking institutions for the borrower. The output of the thesis is finding the most advantageous peer-to-peer loans provider for a given applicant and its subsequent comparison with a selected banking institution. Finally, general recommendations are made for applicants to help them choose the appropriate consumer loans provider.

Bachelor thesis is focused on issues connected with providing peer-to-peer lending in the Czech Republic. The thesis specifies the main characteristics of sharing economy, crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending, process function, advantages and disadvantages, legislation etc. Objective of the thesis is find out the advantageousness of peer-to-peer offers against other non-bank financial institutions using the comparison method. In addition, SWOT analysis is made, which could be useful for potential platforms, investors and loan applicants.
