First Opium War, 1839-1842

This work deals with the course of the First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), also known as the First Opium War, and the events that led to this conflict. The work describes and evaluates first contacts between Europeans and China, Chinese attitude to foreigners but also political system and problems of Imperial China. The main focus of work is the British tea trade and specifics of this trade known as the Canton System, the British diplomatic mission, development of the opium trade and problems, which opium created and which was the main cause of war with Great Britain and opening of China to the world.
