Nuclear tests and their impact on human health
MACUROVÁ, Michaela
This dissertation was composed to explore nuclear tests and their impacts on human health. The problematics involved with nuclear testing in conjunction with the situation in North Korea are still relevant today. The aim of the thesis was to determine the level of knowledge of the Czech South Bohemian population regarding nuclear weapon testing, and their effects on the human body. The population was divided into two categories; people under 40, and over 40 years of age. The hypotheses of this study are: "Over 2/3 of the respondents in selected localities of the South Bohemian Region will have more than 50 % of correct answers in the questionnaire on nuclear weapons testing and their effects on the human body," and "Respondents older than 40 years will have significantly higher knowledge of nuclear weapons testing and their effects on the human body than respondents younger than age of 40 years." In order to achieve the set aims and verify the hypotheses, a questionnaire was carried out, and the results were then evaluated using descriptive and mathematical statistics. The questionnaire consisted of 13 questions, and in total 100 respondents participated. The results seen from the questionnaire support the first hypothesis mentioned above. The second hypothesis was disproved. Within the framework of this dissertation, an overview of the populations level of knowledge regarding nuclear weapons testing and their effects on human organisms was illustrated for the South Bohemian Region. This dissertation could serve as study material for students of the protection of population degree programme and other related degrees.
Dismay or delight on the neighbour's side? The typology of neighbouring countries' reactions to the first nuclear tests conducted
Sasová, Kateřina ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Bříza, Vlastislav (referee)
This Master thesis compares the reactions of the neighbouring countries to first nuclear tests carried out by their neighbour. It deals with first nuclear tests of eight countries (USA, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea) and with the reactions of states that are or were at the time of the first nuclear test neighbours of concerned country. In the end, forty-seven reactions of neighbouring countries were examined in this thesis. The author relies to a large extent on qualitative research when she compares individual reactions of the countries and creates eight case studies, each focused on one nuclear state. The main output of this thesis is a clear and well-arranged typology of countries' reactions to the first nuclear test carried out in the state right across their borders. The types of reactions that have been identified in this thesis vary all the way from active support and passive coming to terms with the situations, through neutral reaction all the way to passive disapproval and active rejection. This typology can then in the future contribute to a better predictability of the neighbours' reactions and therefore also to a better assessment of how such event might affect the stability of the region.

An Analysis of the Czech Republic's Civilian Population's Awareness of Behavior in the Event of a Nuclear Weapon Attack
KRČAL, Jan
The main objective of this thesis entitled "An Analysis of the Czech Republic's Civilian Population's Awareness of Behavior in the Event of a Nuclear Weapon Attack" was to find out about the awareness of the Czech Republic's population about the pro-tection options against the effects of nuclear weapons. The introductory section contains an overview of these weapons, divided into particular types. It also contains a summary of their primary and secondary effects on the human body, and it is concluded with an overview of the recommended procedures and methods of personal protection. There are several means of improvised protection and methods of their use which are presented in this last mentioned overview, as well as recommended actions in this considered situation, beginning from the moment of warn-ing through shelter to the evacuation. There are results of the survey have been realized in the form of a questionnaire, and have been evaluated and with their graphic representation in the next part of the thesis. The part with the evaluation of the answers also contains a short comment re-garding each question and then it is concluded with a statistical evaluation. The survey respondents were divided by age into the first and the second groups; the age limit was chosen as the date of birth in 1980. The first group represented the respondents born before that year; the second group included those whose date of birth was in that year or later. This made it possible to assess the knowledge of particular generations, especially given the limited availability of information given after 1990 at the primary and secon-dary schools regarding this subject. The survey results showed that the awareness of the Czech Republic's popula-tion of the actions to be undertaken in the case of a nuclear weapon attack is signifi-cantly lower than what is necessary for effective individual protection. There is also significantly lower awareness within the generation born in or after 1980, as compared with the older generations. The solution of this unsatisfactory situation is to incorporate the issues into the lectures at the primary and secondary schools, preferably directly into the curriculum of those schools.
