A Femme fatale, a Mother, a Builder of Communism or...? The Image of women in Czech fiction of Socialist Realism

Abstract The bachelor's diploma thesis deals with the image of women in representative Czech prose fiction of socialist realism with an emphasis on representations created in fiction of the 1950s (alternatively taking into account also the so-called period of 'normalization' of the 1970s). For comparative reasons, it also presents some examples from the Soviet fiction of socialist realism, which influenced the Czech context of the 1950s. The analyses of female literary protagonists take into account both the physiognomic aspect of the body as well as mental characteristics. They focus on the semantic and ideological function, which is attributed to distinctive age groups (the characters of girls, mothers, grandmothers) as well as to the function of a binary opposition 'woman as enemy' versus 'good woman' as they had been coined by the official ideology of that era. The analyses include interpretations of the social status of women in society, or more precisely their social status in a 'man`s world' (social status in a working team versus the status in a family).
