Attributive Clauses and Their Nominalizations: Research Experiment Conducted in Elementary and Secondary Schools
Bajger, Marek ; Hirschová, Milada (advisor) ; Adam, Robert (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the ability of pupils and high school students to nominalize attributive clauses. The data obtained from the results of the Unified entrance exam suggest that this language area is challenging for students to understand. As we were not able to identify which devices students use to nominalize attributive clauses or which mistakes they tend to make during the process, we decided to conduct a research experiment on elementary and secondary schools across the Czech Republic. Therefore, we conducted quantitative research, which aimed to ascertain which factors caused the mistakes made during the nominalization process. Our research data indicate that the success rate differs depending on the grammatical case. One of the factors that contribute to the formation of a grammatically incorrect nominalization is that students often do not realize the word class of deverbative adjectives as attributes in postposition. Moreover, they do not perceive the relation between the noun and its attribute. The data also indicate that students are influenced by the position of the attribute and the modified noun in the sentence structure. Holubová, Barbora ; Duběda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Vacula, Richard (referee)
v anglickém jazyce: This bachelor thesis deals with processes of nominalization in French scientific and popularization articles on chemistry. In order to examine processes of nominalization in French scientific texts, this study first analyses the scientific genre in general, characterizes its stylistic standards and describes the system of its inner differentiation (scientific genres and popularization genre). The main part of this thesis is then focused on processes of nominalization in French scientific texts, more specifically on the transformation from verbs to nouns. The outcomes of the theoretical part are verified by means of quantitative analysis which is realized on a corpus of scientific texts on chemistry in selected substyles. Since the concerned discipline belongs to natural sciences, these texts are found to be more formal. Klíčová slova: nominalization, scientific genre, popularization genre, French
