The reflection of everyday life of a prisoners of war in archaeological sources from post-World War 2 "POW" camps

During the author previous study, the non-destructive research of the second world war camp took a place near the city of Nová Bystřice. The whole area of the camp and especially the relics are highly damaged here, and still are the main subject of the author interest. The damage was that high so the author decided to use an destructive method of archaeological research - the excavation one of the sanitary objects located in the area of the camp. These monuments, often disturbed, continue to be the subject of this work. The aim of this work is to make an insight into the everyday life of the prisoner of war from the point of view of archaeology and to clarify and identify patterns of activities inside military camps based on archaeological prospection. The work will provide an overview of the current state of cognition of the Second World War archaeology in the world, then present the author's research of the waste object from the camp near Nová Bystřice. Samples from the investigated objects will be subjected to analyzes (archaeobotanical, archaeozoological). The aim of this work is to supplement the current state of knowledge and to bring a new light to the issue of camp relicts based on new methods.
Middle European Military Camps in 1550-1650

The subject of this thesis is the problematics of the military camps of Christian armies in the Central Europe between 1550-1650. We focus on the camps of the Habsburg Monarchy and German lands, yet some space is given to the situation in Poland and Hungary. The introductory chapters consist of a characterization of the source material and an overview of the present state of research. Furthermore, excursuses into several topics related to the military camps of the early modern period are made. Thus, characterizations of the crucial war conflicts of the period, contemporary strategies and tactics, principals, composition and equipment of the armies, of the ranks, and of the life of soldiers are provided. The core of this work is an interpretation and comparison of treatises written by military theorists, who dealt with the problematics of camps, namely of the works by Jan Tarnowski, Guillaume du Bellay, Leonhardt Fronsperger, Lazarus von Schwendi, Giorgio Basta, Johann Jacobi von Wallhausen, and Raimondo Montecuccoli. Additionally, an analysis of the military orders of the Roman emperor Maximilian II and of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf is supplied, followed by memoirs and diaries of soldiers of that era, and contemporary literary fiction. NON-DESTRUCTIVE RESEARCH OF MILITARY CAMPS FROM THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR IN SOUTH BOHEMIA EASTWARDS FROM THE DEMARCATION LINE

This thesis provides a study of military camps from the end of World War II and more closely represents several selected locations in South Bohemia. The work explores these sites from a historical and archaeological point of view. For detailed documentation was selected an area near the town of Nová Bystřice (Jindřichův Hradec). On this area were aplied nondestructive archaeological methods, also, a part of the work is an attempt to create a typology of the remains of the military objects that are located on the site of the camp.
Archaeology of the military camps and field fortifications from the modern period in the region of South Bohemia

This diploma thesis presents an overview of the archaeology of military camps and field fortifications from modern period (1498-1815) in the region of South Bohemia. It summarizes and evaluates the present South Bohemian research in the context of modern Euro-Atlantic conflict archaeology as well as the research conducted in Czech Republic. The recherché deals with published Czech and foreign research. An integral part of thesis is the description of the modern period war events concerning South Bohemia with overlap to bordering regions of Germany and Austria. The core of the study contains several case studies, where author presents various types of sites with temporary military constructions using different methodological approaches suitable for individual types. These include the siege of České Budějovice town during the Bohemian Revolt in the years 1618-1619 investigated by the analysis of the iconographic source, localisation and excavation of remains interpreted as one-off field fortification in Lhenice region, or the identification and interpretation of the field camp based on cartographic sources. These chapters presenting also results of field survey, are accompanied by further topics such as the role of castles in modern period conflicts or issue of borderline fortifications and camps.
