The carnival in Roztoky and its symbolic meaning in the lives of its participants
Burýšková, Kateřina ; Jagošová, Anna (advisor) ; Košťálová, Petra (referee)
This thesis examines the Masopust cultural event in Roztoky u Prahy. The author explores how this event is perceived by its participants, and primarily tries to answer the question concerning what symbolic meaning can visiting this event represent in their lives and whether they perceive this event as an important milestone they would not want to miss each year. Furthermore, the author explores these topics: do the participants actively take part in this event, how do they prepare for this event and whether it is important for them to wear a mask and why. The thesis is divided into two parts, a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part examines the history of the carnival, both in the historical Czech lands, and in Roztoky. The practical part presents the results of the author's field research, conducted in the years 2022 and 2023. Key words: carnival, folklore, folk festivities, contemporary traditions, ethnographic field work, semi-structured interview
