Beran, Lukáš ; Veis, Martin (advisor) ; Dubroka, Adam (referee) ; Výborný, Karel (referee)
Title: Optical and magneto-optical studies of ferrimagnetic garnets for photonic and spintronic applications Author: RNDr. Lukáš Beran Department: Intitute of Physics of Charles University Supervisor: RNDr. Martin Veis, PhD., Institute of Physics of Charles University Abstract: This doctoral thesis is devoted to fabrication and systematic char- acterization of physical properties of thin films of iron garnets with potential applications in photonic and spintronic devices. Investigated samples were pre- pared by metallo-organic decomposition and pulsed laser deposition. The study was focused on structural and magnetic characterizaiton along with optical and magneto-optical properties. Obtained experimental results were further con- fronted with theoretical calculations. The application potencial of garnets for photonic devices was discussed based on determined Figure of Merit (Faraday rotation to optical loss ratio). High values were achieved for single crystal thin film of Ce doped yttrium iron garnet on galium gadolinium garnet substrate as well as for pollycrystalline Bi doped yttrium iron garned on silicon substrate. Furthermore, new rare-earth garnets were prepared with attempt to achieve per- pendicular magnetic anisotropy of these film. This was achieved for three di erent materials, which were not...
Optical and magneto-optical properties of Heusler compounds
Král, Daniel ; Veis, Martin (advisor)
Cílem této práce bylo studium Heuslrových sloučenin pomocí optických a magneto-optických (MO) metod. V případě první sloučeniny, Co2FeGa0.5Ge0.5, jsme studovali výskyt strukturálního disorderu za pomoci spektroskopické elipsometrie, MO spektroskopie a MO Kerrovy magnetome- trie. Experimentální výsledky jsme poté porovnali s teoretickými modely. Doplnili jsme také výsledky našich spolupracovník·, a to včetně X-ray difrakce, atomic-force mikroskopie a ab initio výpočt·, abych potvrdili naši interpretaci naměřených výsledk·. 1
Study of physical properties of Heusler alloys
Beran, Lukáš ; Veis, Martin (advisor)
This diploma thesis is devoted to systematic study of structural trans- formations of Heusler alloys by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy. Structural transformations in these alloys are induced by different microscopic mechanisms. Obtained experimental results were confronted with theoretical calculations. This allowed the discussion of obtained results and suggestion of their interpretation. In the case of Co- Fe-Si alloys, changes in optical and magneto-optical properties with change of Co-Fe ratio were observer. This was explained by lowering of the gap for minority spins with increasing Fe concentrations. Temperature dependent optical and magneto-optical properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloy showed the pres- ence of so-called Martensitic transformation from cubic to tetragonal phase. A study of Mn-Rh-Co-Sn alloys did not show a clear dependence of physical properties upon the concentration of Rh and Mn. This was explained by strong strain inside the samples, which distorted obtained results. 1

Physics of interfaces in magnetic nano structures
Ohnoutek, Lukáš ; Veis, Martin (advisor) ; Urbánek, Michal (referee)
Modification of interfaces in nanostructures can significantly influence their overall properties. Magneto-optical spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry are ideal for studying these phenomena thanks to their in-depth sensitivity and contactless measurements. Two methods of nonreversible modification of magnetic properties, especially the magnetic anisotropy, are investigated. The measured spectral dependence of magneto-optical Kerr effect is compared to a theoretical calculation in order to determine the profile of the samples for different levels and methods of modification. In addition to this, ellipsometric measurements are performed on a device whose optical properties change by voltage application.

Spectroscopic studies of Co2MnSi Heusler alloy
Král, Daniel ; Veis, Martin (advisor) ; Uhlířová, Klára (referee)
In the last years Heusler compounds showed properties that make them suitable materials for spintronic applications. Their magnetic and optical proper- ties are strongly dependent on their structural order, making it an important mat- ter of research. Co2MnSi can exhibit diferent types of lattices, i.e. B2 and L21, while B2 transits to L21 by the process of annealing. In this work we present a stu- dy of optical and magneto-optical properties of Co2MnSi thin films with different annealing temperatures. Spectroscopic ellipsometry as well as magneto-optical spectroscopy in linear and quadratic configurations were used as experimental techniques. Our goal was to determine wheather the magneto-optical meassure- ments are more accurate tools for lattice transitions studies than spectroscopic ellipsometry.
