Current trends in translation technologies

The thesis summarizes available literature about translation technologies. The history of machine translation is extensively talked about and offers varying viewpoints on machine translation from different countries. Main approaches toward machine translation are provided, with examples of function for each one. Some of the most popular machine translators are showcased. A brief summary of translation evaluation is given and computer-assisted translation and its tools are explained extensively. Advantages and disadvantages of these systems is also talked about. The shift in the translation profession is also presented. Lastly, the practical part focuses on the importance of the human element and post-edit in current translation technologies.

Master thesis entitled "Translation of selected lexical units by tools supporting machine translation - focused on concepts from legal terminology." In the theoretical part, it first deals with translation as such, then with the translation of legal texts, the specifics of legal language and last but not least the use of computer tools for the translation of legal lexis. The experiment in the practical part evaluated the automatic translation of single-word, multi-word and template language legal terms by selected machine translators.
