This thesis covers the history of whaling in Japan. It maps the evolution of whaling techniques in four phases from primitive passive whaling to norwegian method, it deals with the emergence of pelagic whaling and its development. The thesis puts main focus particulary on the development in 20th century. It follows closely the modernization of Japanese whaling before the Second World War, its boom after the war and the gradual crisis related to the international restrictions of whaling industry which lead to the declaration of moratorium on commercial whaling. It also deals with the situation of Japanese whaling after the moratorium came in force and with the whaling under scientific permits. The thesis further clarifies the conflict between maintaining the tradition of whale-hunting in Japan and the international pressure to stop it. In the end, it offers a solution of current situation and possible options of the course in the future.
