Education and crime - the economic view
Šipkovská, Silvie ; Vyhnánek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Adam, Tomáš (referee)
In her thesis, the author addresses the relationship between education and selected types of crime (economic, property and violent crime) in the context of the national economy. The aim of the thesis is to show that the relationship between crime and education is much more complex than it may appear on the basis of current findings and observations and that, besides education, the criminal career of an offender is also significantly influenced by his/her family background and, therefore, it is appropriate to include this factor into the analysis. The analytical section of the thesis is divided into two separate parts. The first part, which deals with the phenomenon of crime in general, describes the dependency of individual crime types, education and family background by means of tables and diagrams showing percentages of individual variables and using contingency tables and correlation tables. The analysis confirms that there is a significant relationship between crime and the combination of education and family background. This hypothesis, however, manifests itself only in respect of certain types of family background, namely the backgrounds described as "working class" and "intelligentsia". The second part is devoted to recidivism as a particularly negative phenomenon -58% of offenders in the analysed...
The Empirical Analysis of Efficiency of Wagering Market
Flegr, Jan ; Hronza, Martin (advisor) ; Koubek, Ivo (referee)
Aim of this diploma thesis is to provide empirical tests of market efficiency of tennis wagering market. In large dataset, which consists of nearly 47 thousands matches and 225 thousands odds, I am searching for anomalies, which can prove market inefficiency. Potentially profitable and exploitable betting strategies are also examined. Main tools of empirical analysis are linear probability models and logit models. Favorit-longshot bias is present in my data, this finding is consistent with results of other empirical works (Lahvička, 2013; Cain, Law, Peel, 2000). Major contribution of this paper is confirmation of home-away bias, the issue, which was not tested in tennis matches so far. The same holds for chart-bias. I am not able to find profitable wagering rules based on out-of-sample predictions of my models. Simple betting rule, which consists of betting systematically on overwhelming favorites, is derived from historical odds. This strategy yields a profit 0,0094, but it's applicability is very limited.
Human capital and willingness to invest in education
Kras, Jakub ; Bisová, Sára (advisor) ; Brožová, Dagmar (referee)
The theoretical part of the thesis describes the theory of human capital and education investments. The empirical analysis follows up the factors which influence the decision of the High school students in Teplice and Prague -- whether to study at university or not. The analysis is based on data, obtained by questionnaire survey, made in four types of high schools: the grammar school, the secondary technical school, the secondary health school and business academy. The main factors include the type of the secondary schools, the income of parents, study expenses, expected future salary and the income of parents, study expenses, expected future salary and the education of parents. The analysis has proven, that the students from Prague want to attend the university more than the students from Teplice. Significant factors for students from Teplice are the type of the high school, study expenses, the education of father while for the students from Prague are among the others important factors connected with the future salary and the education of mother.
