Eseje o ekonomii sportu
Lahvička, Jiří ; Chytil, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Schwarz, Jiří (referee) ; Pertold Gebická, Barbara (referee)
This dissertation consists of five articles about economics of sports. The first three articles investigate various types of outcome uncertainty and how they relate to match attendance demand, while the remaining two articles test the efficiency of sports betting markets. The first article presents a new method of calculating match importance. Unlike the previous approaches in the literature, it does not require ex-post information and can be used for any type of season outcome. The second article shows that the additional playoff stage in the Czech ice hockey "Extraliga" lowers the probability of the strongest team becoming a champion and thus increases seasonal uncertainty. The third article demonstrates that the inconsistent findings in the literature about the link between match uncertainty and attendance could be explained by wrongly specified regressions, proposes a new approach to analyzing the effect of match uncertainty and shows that attendance demand is maximized if teams of the same quality play against each other. The fourth article examines the favorite-longshot bias in the context of betting on tennis matches. It shows that the favorite-longshot bias pattern is consistent with bookmakers protecting themselves against both better informed insiders and the general public exploiting new information. The fifth article investigates the supposedly profitable strategy of betting on soccer draws using the Fibonacci sequence. The strategy is tested both in a simulated market and on a real data set and found to lose money.
Analysis of Attendance in Czech Ice Hockey Extraliga
Opavský, Tomáš ; Novotný, Jiří (advisor) ; Kuchár, Róbert (referee)
The aim of this Master's thesis is to find, describe and analyse factors influencing the audience demand for Czech ice hockey extraliga matches and on the basis of the observed facts to try to suggest conceivable measures to increase such demand. There are especially mathematical and statistical methods widely applied in the practical part of the thesis. Particularly, arithmetic averages, correlation analyses and various kinds of specific coefficients are used. Average attendances and significance of individual factors are evaluated using the method of comparison, namely its factual, temporal as well as spatial form. The main contribution of this thesis consists mainly in the current mapping of the extraleague club fans' opinions and attitudes through the implementation of the comprehensive on-line survey whose results are contained in individual paragraphs.
Ice Hockey Match Prediction Using Data Mining Model
Matuš, Martin ; Maryška, Miloš (advisor) ; Volavka, Filip (referee)
This thesis focuses on creation and comparison of ice hockey matches prediction models with the view on ice hockey world championship matches. The first part is dedicated to collecting theoretical knowledge needed for solving this problem and the second to applying this set of knowledge. The model creation approach is intertwined with the CRISP-DM data mining methodology, which also defines several chapters of this work. As input data for the models I used performance statistics of individual ice hockey players -- this brought me to implementing a script capable of automatic downloading and aggregating of player data from the Internet. Downloaded data were arranged so as they would represent ice hockey matches that were played during the championships (team A consisting of players X against team B consisting of players Y) with result of the match added to the data row. Data were also analyzed to detect any quality issue prior to the model creation and transformed into an integrated view. Result assessment consists of two parts, in the first the technical evaluation of models using data from the testing data set takes place. The first part also points out practical usefulness of the models. The next part is about comparing result data with the betting odds -- the business relevance of the model. This part uses open source data about betting odds listed on the corresponding matches. Finally, the outcome model is used for predicting matches of the group phase of the world championship taking place in Prague, 2015.
Attendance analysis of HC Sparta Praha
Jankovič, Velimír ; Melzochová, Jitka (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
In bachelor thesis I investigate seasonal match attendance of HC Sparta Praha ice-hockey team in seasons 2002/2003 to 2012/2013 and the individual match attendance in seasons 2008/2009 to 2012/2013. The acquired data were processed by regression analysis and the effects of attendance determinants were quantified using OLS-method (ordinary least squares). The team rivalry and the prestigious players' appearance in match belong to the most significant factors. By derby-matches the attendance increased by almost 59%. On the other hand, there has not been found any coherency between the attendance and ticket price -- which gives to the Sparta's management a very good range for maneuvering regarding pricing policy.
Naming rights of stadiums and arenas
Hovorka, Jakub ; Novotný, Jiří (advisor) ; Kotáb, Jiří (referee)
My diploma thesis deals with one of the incomes of sports arenas and stadiums, which is known as naming rights. This term means the cooperation between the owner of sports facilities with private companies, which pay the fee for hiring the name of stadium or arena. In the first part I explain what the naming rights are and I refer also about other stadium's and arena's incomes. In further chapters I analyze the top football and hockey leagues in sports and economically developed countries all over the world. The survey follows. It covers the naming rights situation in the Czech Republic. Based on the results of the survey I compare naming rights in the Czech Republic and in the analyzed countries.
Comparison of circadian typology and circadian rhythms in groups of sporting adolescents (ice-hockey players) and unsporting adolescents
CHRT, Jakub
The aim of the thesis "Comparation of circadian typology and circadian rhythms in groups of sporting adolescents (ice-hockey players) and unsporting adolescents" was to analyze the circadian rhythms and daily habits adolescents. Explore and compare two files consisting of research in sports (hockey players) and unsporting adolescents boys. The obtained results confirm or refute the assumptions set out the research. The survey was conducted questionnaires life rhythms and sleep patterns 9 to 15 years (Harada, KREJČÍ, 2010). Processed data were statistically processed in Kochi University and subsequently evaluated. The results show the diversity of test files and confirm the significantly most of the research assumptions.

Age structure analysis at Ice jockey players on World Championships\\
KROPÁČEK, Jan
My thesis deals with the problem of analysis of age structure of the top three ice-hockey teams at the world championships from 1970 to 2007. At the beginning, I put together all the data about players who took part in these championships and finished on the top three places. I evaluated these data with the help of Microsoft Excel programme. The results were divided into three periods given by the changes in play systems of ice-hockey championships. The average age of players at different championships, who placed themselves to the medal positions in years 1970 to 2007, is clearly visible in the graphs and charts.
