Alienation, helplessness and loneliness of a foreigner. Representation of anxious feelings in the prose of Egon Hostovský

This thesis focuses on the work of the Czech writer Egon Hostovský, who spent most of his life in exile. The central theme of his prose was wandering, exile, the desire for anchoring and, above all, a person who was a stranger among people. These existential questions about the foreigner's place in the world are still relevant today. The aim of the thesis is to define the basic characteristics of the most prominent of the anxious feelings appearing in the work of the above mentioned author, i.e. the feeling of alienation, strangeness and loneliness. The area of research are mainly novels Listy z vyhnanství, Cizinec hledá byt, Dobročinný večírek, Všeobecné spiknutí and Tři noci. In these works, the subject of the feeling of alienation, internal and external exile is explored using the method of gradual analysis of the image of the foreigner, the motif of exile and the question of the otherness and difference of the characters. The analysis also focuses on the linguistic side, which in the selected prose provides a remarkable perspective on the presentation of the foreigner, the characteristics of his inner world and his position in the physical world.
