Its central focus is "What can animation bring into the field of documentary film?" Chapter Two glances at the long-lasting relationship of animation and documentary, comparing a number of definitions for both fields, looks for a definition. Additionally, it lists various handmade animation techniques with several examples and tries to categorize different functions of animation. The Third Chapter analyzes a selection of films (A Is for Autism, Doctors' Life Between Life and Death, Ecumenopolis: City Without Limits and The People Who Try to Save the World) in the light of these functions. These case studies also include interviews with the directors, which explain their thinking processes and reasons for some of their choices. As a result, this study concludes in the thought that combining animation within the documentary film can create a meaningful form; a whole which is far more than sum of its parts.
The use of Archive Family Footage Documentary Film
Janečková, Veronika ; KUBICA, Petr (advisor) ; VACHEK, Karel (referee)
In this thesis I explore more deeply the topic from my bachelor diploma thesis ?Archiving Family Film?. Through an analysis of family film from the thirties to the present day, I want to draw attention to this distinctive form of amateur filmmaking which is overlooked today. Above all I want to focus on the filmmakers Peter Forgács and Jan Šikl. I explore their different approaches and points of view, and their use of archive family footage in their documentary works ?Private Hungary? and ?Private Century?. By comparing films from these documentary cycles, I point out what makes the works of these two directors unique. I also elaborate on my work with family archive footage in my film ?Sestření? (?Sistering? - 2nd year exercise ? authorial portrait), and I reflect on the approach that I adopted when shooting my bachelor?s diploma film, ?Roots of Relationship or How Granddaughter and Grandmother couldn?t get the Turnip out.? I explain my use of methods taken from family footage in my work as a documentary filmmaker, and discuss my personal experience and achievements in this field.

Core of thesis is the way of production documentary. Process of shooting and editing explores how documentary can eliminate (when you show something- you must hide something). Documentary use different ways of elimination than discourse because is based on coincidence and shots which are based on reality (not in the structure of language). Documentary is restricted by society understanding term "documentary" it is simultaneously basic condition for its existence.

Cinematographers of czech documentary film
Šuster, Jan ; Jícha, Marek (advisor) ; Ulver, Stanislav (referee)
In my dissertation I focus on the professional, as well as on the personal, points of view of various documentary cinematographers and on the complexity of the image conveyed in the works of audiovisual documentaries. Through the eyes of four generations of directors of photography, I seek to compose a holistic view of the Czech cinematography. In the introduction the history of Czech documentary films is briefly outlined. The following chapter is composed of personal interviews with the four cinematographers. These professionals were chosen according to their experience with documentary films and their contribution to the Czech cinematography in general. Each one of these four professionals has a notable character which has, among their distinguished camera work, left an enduring mark on the quality of cinematographic image. The questions directed to them are the same, thus aiming to point out a multi-generation view on the issue of camera work in Czech documentary films, as well as on the characters of the cinematographers themselves. To conclude my dissertation I compare and contrast various attitudes toward the camera work in documentary films. By introducing my personal opinion and confronting with the ideas presented by these four generations of professionals, I aim to express the point of views of the new, fifth, generation of cinematographers.
