Settlement Desertion in Consequence of Opencast Brown Coal Mining in the Most District and Chomutov District - the Example of the ČSA Mine

- Settlement Desertion in Consequence of Opencast Brown Coal Mining in the Most District and Chomutov District - the Example of the ČSA Mine The thesis deals with the settlement desertion due to the open cast mining of brown coal. The area of interest is the ČSA Mine which lies on the border of the Most and Chomutov districts. The first part is devoted to the changes in the settlement structure of the both districts in the 20th century, with the emphasis placed on the settlement desertion. The concentration of the settlement was affected not only by the destruction of residential structures, but also by the post-war transfer of Czech Germans and the process of urbanization. Population changes in the Chomutov and Most districts are processed also graphically. The other part of this work is focused on the ČSA quarry itself and the settlement destroyed as a result of its expansion. The regional ecological mining limits, set by the government in 1991, protect the villages of Horní Jiřetín and Černice against the advancing liquidation process. The issue of breaking those limits is processed using qualitative research - an analysis of interviews with representatives of neighboring municipalities, civic associations and mining companies.
